📢 Check out this fantastic opportunity aboard the iconic Norwegian tall ship Seilskipet Statsraad Lehmkuhl! ⚓️ The Statsraad Lehmkuhl will set sail for the next leg of its journey in April 2025 to inspire global awareness of ocean sustainability, through the One Ocean Expedition 2025 – 2026. 🔬 There is an opening for a Science Coordinator (SC) who combines technical expertise in handling scientific equipment with strong communication skills to effectively convey scientific concepts to a broad audience. ⛵️ They are seeking two Science Coordinators to split the role who will work in shifts on the same rotation schedule as the permanent crew (1:1 system, with approximately 4–6 weeks on and 4–6 weeks off). The standard working hours on board are 10 hours per day. While we aim to provide a private cabin for each Science Coordinator, due to limited space, one must be prepared to share a cabin with others during the expedition. 💸 Salary and insurance NOK 42.500 per month + holiday pay. Occupational injury insurance. Sasakawa Peace Foundation (JP) as partner to the One Ocean Expedition generously funds the science coordinator position. 👉 Applications to be sent to [email protected] before 5 December 2024. Expected start of the position: Mid-February 2025 for the training period or after with further agreement. See the websites for more information: www.lehmkuhl.no and www.oneoceanexpedition.com

COP have just doomed the planet, and its not climate change In a recent report published in Nature, https://lnkd.in/enUqxsyM It is stated that plankton, the life support system for the planet and primary regulator of the climate, may not survive climate change. The report states that there will be a mass migration to the higher latitude, colder waters. However, due to ocean acidification, the high latituds have a much lower alkalinity, and it is becoming impossible for plankton to survive. Take the Bering Sea as an example: https://lnkd.in/epWaeVGu The Plymouth Marine Lab also report a 50% reduction in krill, this loss of biomass is equivalent to the entire mass of humanity https://lnkd.in/ef22NiNa The most important ocean, the Southern Ocean, is dying, with 25% covered by HNLC dead zones. https://lnkd.in/egzREctB The dead zones are expanding at a rate of 1% to 2% year on year. https://lnkd.in/ezzmdaCr On top of all this, you throw into the mix the real killer, toxic lipohillic chemical pollution, partially combusted carbon, and microplastics that are destroying everything and killing the life support system of the planet and nature everywhere. Biogenic factors such as plankton and the SML surface microlyer or skin on the surface of the world's oceans regulate 70% of the climate. https://lnkd.in/ev6_2cXN Already more humans die from pollution than all the wars and diseases combined, the Lancet on Planetary Health reports. 80% of all of Nature (see WWF reports) has already been destroyed; over the next 20 years, unless there is a radical shift, close to 100% will have been destroyed. We could survive and adapt to climate change; it will be impossible to adapt to the loss of nature. Yet we have the world debating at COP how much money high-income countries should give (or not give) to low-income countries for climate adaptation.

Every little action counts on our mission to protect and restore our ocean and waters 🌊! Did you know that many people still flush their waste down the toilet, effecting not only the sewage systems in cities, but also the health of our ocean and waters 🌊? #MissionOcean & Waters project CLIMAREST reveals that cotton buds, contact lenses and wet wipes are just some of the products that end up in our rivers and seas, polluting and harming #marine life 🐟. The problem is not just carelessness, but also the mislabelling of products as ‘flushable’, which creates further confusion. We are proud to see four of our EU-funded projects winning the Atlantic Project Award at the Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference in Bordeaux on 22 November. This year, six awards were granted as recognition of the projects’ outstanding performance in five award categories. ⚡ Marine Renewable Energy: FLORA Ocean Station (EMFAF) This project is developing a prototype of an ocean station with renewable energy generation and oceanographic capabilities. 🌊 Healthy Oceans and Resilient Coasts: C-FAARER (Horizon Europe Mission Ocean) and MSP-OR (EMFF) C-FAARER supports ocean farmers to develop community-driven business models for regenerative ocean farming. MSP-OR helps national authorities with the implementation of maritime spatial planning in the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and French Guiana. 🤝 International Cooperation: A-AAGORA - Atlantic Arctic Agora (Horizon Europe Mission Ocean) This project aims to support the European Commission to reduce pressures in coastal areas to boost resilience to climate change and mitigate its impacts. Finally, HYDEA won in the Atlantic Ports category, while BLUESKILLING INNOVATION (both funded under Interreg Atlantic Area) was awarded in the Blue Skills and Ocean Literacy.
