We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. John C. Eichelberger has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of Geosciences MDPI (ISSN: 2076-3263). Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Prof. Dr. Eichelberger received the European Geosciences Union (EGU) Soloviev Medal in Natural Hazards in 2015, and was designated a Distinguished Lecturer for Continental Scientific Drilling by the Geological Society of America in 2020. Prof. Dr. Eichelberger also founded the Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT), which is developing the world’s first international observatory for studying an active magma body. On Friday, we hosted the first annual summit for our External Editors based in the North of England. Throughout the day we had talks from several members of MDPI, roundtable discussions on the peer review process and upholding research integrity, and an engaging presentation from the Editor-in-Chief of Mathematics MDPI, Francisco Chiclana, about his involvement with the Research Excellence Framework. This was a great first summit for MDPI UK with terrific feedback from our Editor-in Chiefs, Section-Editor-in-Chiefs, and Editorial Board Members. Semi-arid soils, with their low SOC content, often struggle to achieve optimal productivity. Biochar has emerged as an effective soil amendment that improves soil properties and crop yield in various cropping systems. Coal char, mentioned in this field study from the University of Wyoming, was produced through coal pyrolysis under oxygen-limiting conditions and shares similar characteristics with biochar. The results show that coal char and biochar, when applied with manure, increased crop yield by improving the physical and chemical properties of sandy loam soils in semi-arid areas. The stable carbon of pyrolyzed char materials offers long-term benefits with just a single application.
