A day to celebrate what's next for our ecosystem and our Commonwealth. Today, we gathered at the Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, MIT, and Harvard in celebration of the passage of the #MassLeadsAct which reauthorizes the state’s Life Sciences Initiative over 10 years, providing critical capital funds and expanding the tax credit program to spur job creation and growth. The time is now to work collaboratively and own the #1 global life sciences position, defining the standard for medical research, industry partnerships, and equitable healthcare delivery.

#DidYouKnow Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. Moreover, it the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the country. Dr. Elizabeth Mittendorf, Director of the Breast Immuno-Oncology program, Co-Leader of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Co-Leader of the Breast Program for the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, is leveraging digital pathology to identify and cure high risk breast cancer. Partnering with PathAI, Dr. Mittendorf was awarded more than $740,000 through the MLSC’s Women’s Health Collaboration program in 2021. Her project involved designing computer algorithms capable of identifying features in tumor biopsies and surgical specimens that can distinguish between high- and low-risk breast tumors. The Collaboration program and other efforts part of the MLSC Women’s Health Initiative are accepting applications through Dec. 6, 2024 at 1 p.m. EST. On behalf of the MLSC, we share in extending our condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of former Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development Secretary Greg Bialecki. As Secretary and Co-Chair of the MLSC's Board of Directors, he provided a powerful and engaged voice, support, and leadership for the Center and our broader life sciences ecosystem in Massachusetts.
Last week, we lost an important member of our economic development family with the passing of former Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development Secretary Greg Bialecki. Greg was a super talented individual with a passion for housing, permitting, and economic development and had an incredible impact while serving our state as secretary from 2009 to 2015. He was also a generous and thoughtful friend to so many in our office. We extend our condolences to his family and will continue to honor his legacy in our work on behalf of the communities and people of Massachusetts.
