Who else has switched into full holiday mode?! Our team is in the holiday spirit, which means that many of our daily doodles and illustrations are holiday-themed too. It got us thinking about what we’d put on our L&D holiday wish list if we were really honest about what would make a learning creator’s dreams come true. Enjoy this festive comic by our designer, Kendra Hutchings (featuring wish-list items from some of our Maestro Community members!) and let us know in the comments what you’d put on your L&D wish list! Picture this: you’re sitting down to write a storyboard for an eLearning module—the topic is important to your organization but has the potential to bore the socks off of your learners. You stare at the blank screen. What do you do? - Write the content in a lecture-presentation format - Make a trivia game out of it - Write a realistic scenario question you know learners will relate to In this case—and many others—we’d opt for scenario-based learning. Scenarios are a highly effective learning strategy for engaging learners and helping them practice skills and build confidence in realistic environments. Plus, everyone loves a good story: writing scenarios for training leverages the power of storytelling to simplify complex topics and encourage learners to reflect on what they’ve learned. More often than not, scenarios are the most engaging, relevant, and transferable choice you can make for your learning experience. But not all scenarios are created equal. It takes practice to learn how to write a scenario that keeps learners engaged and helps achieve your learning goals. We’ve been putting in the work to learn what makes a scenario successful. Check out our blog for a quick overview of scenario-based learning and a few simple steps for how to write a scenario that engages your learners: https://lnkd.in/gRFTBYKD #learningstrategy #instructionaldesign #learningleaders #learninganddevelopment

Want to know the secret to memory retention in learners? 🧠 Picture this: You’re designing a learning experience but the subject matter is dull, tedious, or otherwise considered boring by learners. What do you do? A common strategy is to try and liven things up with a funny story, interesting fact, or relevant meme. These tangential attempts to capture students’ interest and help them pay attention are what researchers call “seductive details”—and they can often get in the way of learning. Is it time to banish your go-to Garfield comic to your desktop recycling bin? Not so fast. For the Learning & the Brain blog, learning expert Andrew Watson explores a recent study that finds that combining seductive details with the right-sized retrieval practice is the key to improving memory retention in learners. Two kinds of retrieval practice are used in the study. The first is a brain dump, in which learners are asked to write down everything they remember about what they’ve learned. The second strategy asks learners to answer highly specific questions about the lesson’s main ideas. One week later, the students who did the brain-dump retrieval exercise remembered the seductive detail (goats eating coffee beans and jumping around—we're not kidding!) but retained less of the meaningful content. The students who answered specific retrieval questions remembered the important ideas of the lesson but not the seductive detail. The takeaway: seductive details can help liven up dry subject matter, but they can also distract from what you really want learners to know. “If I have to teach a topic my students find dull, I can indeed include some seductive details (Ha ha! Goats!) to capture their interest,” says Watson. “As long as I conclude that lesson with some highly specific retrieval practice questioning.” Want insights like this delivered to your inbox every week? What do a hotel concierge, barista, and park ranger have in common? 🤔 They all want to provide excellent customer service and help people have the best experience possible. When we partnered with the University of Minnesota’s Tourism Center on a customer service training program, they had clear goals in mind: to address workforce challenges in their local customer service industry, and ultimately, help customer service professionals create better experiences for their customers. Over the course of several months, we created a comprehensive 10-module program, covering foundational customer service topics, like inclusive service, effective communication, service recovery, and more—lessons that would be applicable from the hotel front-desk to the state park trailhead. But these were no average Rise courses. Using the Mighty extension for Articulate Rise, we embedded custom interactive videos in the courses. These humorous, relatable videos featured custom HTML overlays that prompted learners to make decisions and choose their own adventure, allowing them to try out the best practices they learned and play out different scenarios (for better or worse). The prompts were appropriately challenging, which fostered critical thinking, captured learner interest, and helped to make the learning stick. Feedback would appear when relevant, to reinforce learning moments. And there was even a helpful mentor who would occasionally weigh in and help the learner when they got stuck. Want to experience the modules for yourself? Head over to the case study now to play out different customer-service scenarios and put your skills to the test! . . . #elearningdevelopment #elearning #elearningsolutions #elearningdeveloper #elearningdesign #elearningtips #learninganddevelopment #corporatelearning #articulate #storyline
