Just got back from a trip to one of Living Carbon’s reforestation project sites in Southern WV, where site prep is ongoing on a former surface mine. Mining and common reclamation practices result in compacted soils that often need to be ripped before trees can be planted. The goal is to get down past that rocky, top layer until we reach organic soil where tree seedlings can take root when we plant them in the spring. This work is not cheap or easy but luckily we have forester extraordinaire Andy Norris to oversee these projects, and a voluntary carbon market to finance this work that is so needed in Appalachia’s coal regions.
