Congratulations, Tappe Architects, for winning one of LBD's Citation of Excellence Awards for the Sharon High School project! One juror commented, "The interior design is stunning, particularly the café space, which features beautiful graphics. I appreciate the abundant daylighting and the thoughtful exterior entry and site design. The photos effectively showcase the positive experience for students. Imagine seeing 100% improvement in student’s reading rates in just a few months. Imagine transforming spaces once only utilized by eight kids a day to media centers bustling at maximum capacity for six hours of the day. That’s what is happening at the School District of Indian River County in Vero Beach, FL where environments were designed under MooreCo’s Thrive Philosophy. Centering on six key areas of human development, Thrive adapts to the changes and challenges 21st-century learners face. It centers on adaptive and agile spaces in which furnishings and tools meet the physical, sensory, and emotional needs of multiple users and creates dynamic spaces where students can nurture innovative thinking while preparing them for the future workforce. Learning By Design Magazine thanks AIA-CAE (The American Institute of Architects: Committee on Architecture for Education) for its recent contribution to the Fall edition of LBD, "Universal Design for Restrooms and Athletic Facilities". Changing access and supervision requirements have begun to challenge the traditional norm of designing segregated, gender-specific restrooms and locker rooms for K–12 schools. Single-user facilities, as described in this article, offer a more humane and dignified approach to the traditional toileting and locker room experience. When designed appropriately, single-user facilities bring a variety of benefits to end users and administrators such as enhanced privacy, shorter wait times, greater accessibility, and improved student mental and physical health. Meet authors Brad Hughes, Dr. Renae Mantooth, and Dr. Michael Ralph of "K–12 POEs Are Inconsistent, Even at the Highest Levels" Despite widespread acknowledgment that more research is needed on the impact of various design strategies, there is currently no industry consensus on what post-occupancy evaluation (POE) tools project teams should use to evaluate the effectiveness of K–12 learning spaces. As part of a collaborative industry-led effort to standardize evaluation practices in K–12 design research, researchers from the Coalition for the Advanced Understanding of School Environments (CAUSE) conducted a review of K–12 POE practices among the firms doing the largest shares of K–12 work in 2023.
