LeadingAge Maryland, Civic Works and Grace Medical Center (formerly Bon Secours Hospital) were selected to receive a grant from the West Baltimore Renaissance Foundation (WBRF) to help identify and combat addiction issues in senior housing, provide health services, and connect individuals to benefits and other programs. The strategy, EQUIP (Energize, Quality of Life, Uplift, Integrate, and Promote), will focus on four West Baltimore senior affordable housing buildings in 2025. "LeadingAge is doing critical work combating the opioid crisis in our city. Through partnerships like this one, supported by the West Baltimore Renaissance Foundation, my Administration — along with the Baltimore City Health Department and the Mayor's Office of Older Adult Affairs and Advocacy — is acting on our commitment to ensure Baltimore's older residents have access to vital resources and training opportunities. Together, we are making great strides to protect and support some of our most vulnerable older residents," Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott said. Opioid overdoses are killing older adults in affordable senior housing settings across the country, including here in Baltimore at alarmingly high rates. LeadingAge Maryland is thrilled to announce we are partnering with Civic Works, Inc. and Lifebridge Health Grace Medical Center and New Hope Treatment Center to EQUIP affordable senior housing providers and promote harm reduction practices. Thank you to the West Baltimore Renaissance Foundation for their leadership and for funding this critical work. This initiative has been many months in the making, and I am incredibly grateful to Sarah Hemming, Liddy Garcia-Bunuel, Erin Dorrien, Erin Russell, Kurt Sommer, Earl Millett, Zachary Kosinski, and Jill Schumann for their support and helping to make this project come to life. Thank you to Brandon M. Scott and John David "J.D." Merrill for expressing support for this project, and for the work you are doing to ensure Baltimore is set up to effectively address these challenges city-wide. We look forward to the coming year and the opportunity to help affordable senior housing providers learn and embody best practices for reducing stigma and supporting wellbeing for older adults who are struggling with substance abuse disorder. https://lnkd.in/ejKiTBE7

Art has an incredible way of uniting people and building community, which was beautifully showcased at the recent resident art show. A new art piece was unveiled, and residents had the chance to admire and celebrate each other’s creations. Adding to the festive spirit, attendees enjoyed delicious treats, crafted ornaments, and soaked in the joy of live Christmas music. What a beautiful community-building event!

LeadingAge Maryland was founded in 2011 by a passionate group of leaders who wanted a strong, state-level voice for nonprofit aging services organizations. Since 2011, our membership has nearly tripled, and our community now includes more than 145 organizations and communities and 70+ business members and sponsors. Our provider members engage with us in numerous ways. Over the past year alone, our members and other community partners have engaged with us more than 1,350 times, including participating in webinars, symposiums, our annual conference, leadership development programming, and participation on association workgroups and committees. This does not include the countless hours of one-on-one technical support and assistance we've provided to our members, our tireless advocacy efforts with state agencies and lawmakers on behalf of our members, or the many national level benefits, policy expertise, and educational opportunities included as part of LeadingAge membership. Beyond what we provide our current members, LeadingAge Maryland serves as a hub for innovation and collaboration. Since 2023, we have secured more than a million dollars in grant funding to improve opportunities for aging well, including projects focused on expanding access to services for older adults living in affordable senior housing, and equipping staff in affordable senior housing with necessary skills and knowledge to best support wellbeing for the older adults in their communities. Together, we are finding ways to make Maryland a better place to grow old. Our association specializes in supporting organizations in meeting their missions today, while also helping them prepare for the future. Whether you work with an aging services or healthcare organization, business firm, government agency, or college or university - we'd love to connect.
