Imagine going through all the work of finalizing a major pharma partnership - years of R&D, millions of dollars, complex negotiations - only to have the deal fall through because of poorly-defined KPIs. Surprisingly (or not, for those involved in these deals), this is more common than you might think. Deals signed between biotechs and pharma can easily unravel, if both sides are not on the exact same page about what milestones need to be met, against what timelines, and with what supporting data. Partnership deals are a big part of the business of biotech. Instilling confidence that your team will deliver on key milestones in time is paramount to success. This week alone, we saw several partnership announcements, of various flavors. Roche teaming up with Flare Therapeutics, GSK working with Vesalius Therapeutics, Novartis paying Schrödinger, Autolus Therapeutics receiving a milestone payment from Blackstone Life Sciences. It sounds simple, but aligning both sides on what the overall (and phased) timeline is + what technical KPIs need to be hit is critically important. Both in negotiating the deals to begin with, and in ensuring a favorable outcome on the other side of the work. Not getting this right can lead to major issues: from painful bleeding of R&D dollars and team time, to deals that fall through entirely (or, worse, lead to litigation). Keeping accurate records of project milestones, communally-defined technical KPIs, and the key data that underpins major decisions, is worth the investment. There are a few ways to achieve this. "Are you an AI company?" might be one of the most expensive questions in biotech right now. Forcing this narrative can lead to biotech companies picking sides and making costly mistakes that lead them to over or under-invest in the ways they advance their R&D and programs. Rather than picking a side ('traditional biotech' versus 'AI company'), the sharpest leaders and most competitive companies will find ways to weave in elements from both angles. And, over time, the conversations will hopefully evolve away from "which one are you?" and more towards whether companies are covering their blind spots and leveraging every edge they can be, in their race to getting drugs to market. https://lnkd.in/dkCtnDtK
