Have You Ever... Have you ever had the experience of sitting in a room full of PhDs and 100s of years of experience being treated like children? Have you ever had the experience of being told all the things you were doing wrong by people far removed from your everyday reality? Have you ever had the experience of being told what you are required to do by these same people? Have you ever had the experience of knowing that what they were saying was completely wrong in your reality? Have you ever sat in the room and wished that just once, these same people would ask you what you thought? Then, you have never experienced a large public school staff or administrative meeting. Personalized Learning With so much being written about the tremendous positive potential of using AI to personalize content instruction for every student, it would be beneficial for some to hear about Kalamazoo Country Day's ongoing journey into personalized education for every student. Our journey towards personalized learning at Kalamazoo Country Day School has been a unique one, marked by steady progress and significant rewards for our students and staff. The benefits of personalized education are significant, but it requires so much more than simply getting everyone an AI tutor. Here is our story: What began as an idea at the formation of the school almost half a century ago was finally named when I first came to the school 7 years ago. The essential aspects of the school were already in existence: small class size, dedicated, experienced teachers, and a focus on academic achievement. Over the past 7 years, the staff and I have worked to define the elements of a proper personalized education. The initial aspect of personalized education was focused on content acquisition. Developing educational plans for students to ensure significant growth in all content areas. Several changes were needed before we could implement this personalized education element. First, we needed an updated, researched curriculum in all content areas. Content that allowed a flow from kindergarten through 8th grade. Second, with natural staff turnover, we hired instructional staff with excellent teaching records and an open mind for educational change. Third, assessments were initiated to track the success of our increased emphasis on personalized education for all students. Fourth, the implementation of Friday staff planning sessions focused on educating all our students. Finally, a Director of Instruction was hired to work with instructional staff on implementing all curricula and delivering high-quality personalized instruction. A tremendous first phase, but there is so much more to do.
