For a parent during the holidays, there is nothing better than seeing their child’s face light up after opening a present. Buying and wrapping those presents, however, requires time and money – privileges that can be out of reach for refugee families newly arrived in the U.S. In recent weeks, JVS held a toy drive for the children of refugees, ESL students, and Adult Basic Education students, and yesterday in East Orange, case managers presented the toys to parents to select and wrap. Each parent left with arms full of gifts for their children. We thank everyone who donated toys for making this event possible. #HappyHolidays #GiftWrapping #ToyDrive #Refugee #RefugeeServices #ESL #AdultBasicEducation #JVSofMetroWest #EastOrange #EssexCounty #NJ #NonProfit

As the weather gets colder and the holidays approach, the mid-year slump often sets in. Overcoming it is even more difficult for refugee families who are new to our country and the school system. To ease the strain, JVS’s Refugee Services department held a workshop on Monday for refugee parents called “Mid-Year: Reflect, Reset, Regain." JVS case managers discussed certain aspects of the U.S. school system that may be unfamiliar to families, and in doing so, equipped them with practical ways to manage the infamous slump. Speaking in both English and Haitian Creole, case managers spoke with parents about understanding report cards, following up with teachers, re-engaging children in learning, and planning for the rest of the school year. The workshop was funded by the RSIG (Refugee School Impact Grant) program. For more information on JVS’s refugee services for children and families, please visit https://lnkd.in/ebhcnrbE or contact Carmel Rigueur at [email protected] or 862-704-2271. #RefugeeWorkshop #MidYear #School #RefugeeServices #RSIG #JVSofMetroWest #EastOrange #EssexCounty #NJ #NonProfit

This past Friday, we celebrated and said farewell to Danny Carter, our security guard. For over 10 years, when clients, staff, and visitors walked through our doors in East Orange, Danny was the first one to greet them. He has worked tirelessly to keep us all safe, and to make sure each person entering JVS gets connected to the services they need. Danny, your absence will be felt by all. We thank you for 10+ years of dedicated service and wish you all the best as you enter your well-deserved retirement. #HappyRetirement #RetirementParty #JVSofMetroWest #NonProfit #EastOrange #NJ
