Peer tutoring has long been a staple of academic support in higher education, but could it rise to the level of a high-impact practice (HIP)? 🌟 In a recent virtual event, we had the privilege of exploring this question with Dr. Jillian Kinzie and Dr. George Kuh, one of the foremost experts on high-impact practices. Together, we explored the potential of peer tutoring to transform student engagement and success. In this clip, Dr. Kuh discusses the value of experiential learning opportunities for college students. Transforming tutoring to empower college students to build skills for success in the classroom & 21st-century workplace.
About us
Knack is a peer tutoring strategy enabling higher education institutions to supplement existing academic support services and create a more personalized, equitable, and accessible support experience for every student at scale: from freshman through senior year. Our goal is to empower campuses with 21st-century technology that transforms academic support services into high-impact, skill-building interactions to reach historically underserved students on campus. The vast majority of students that use our technology to book supplemental tutoring on their campus had previously never utilized support services, spotlighting our proven ability to help you reach the underserved populations who typically do not or cannot seek out these retention-oriented services. Knack is an impact-rated social enterprise advised by high-impact practice (HIPs) expert George Kuh. The company has been featured on Inc.com and Forbes, won the 2019 Lumina Prize for Education Innovation, and is backed by well-known educational institutions such as ETS (creators of GRE) and ASU Enterprise Partners.

Earlier this year, we hosted a webinar featuring Dawna M. Perez, Ph.D., Executive Director of Student Success and Katherine S. Ziemer, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University of New Hampshire. The event focused on how UNH implemented a cost-effective solution to scale high-impact academic support to all students. In the clip below, Kate shares the ROI that UNH has seen through their partnership with Knack. Their investment in Knack delivered a dual benefit: it enabled the scaling of tutoring services while directly benefiting student tutors. Knack’s system alleviates the burden of needing substantial administrative resources, allowing staff and administrators to focus on other priorities. In October, we hosted a webinar focused on improving student outcomes and fostering student success through peer tutoring, featuring Dr. Scott Marzilli, Associate Provost for Student Success & Innovation at The University of Maine. One of the main highlights was hearing from Dr. Marzilli about how their students have been utilizing tutoring outside of the traditional Monday-Friday, 9-5 work hours. This underscores the importance of providing flexible academic support to students, ensuring they can access the help they need at times that fit their schedules. I’m excited to share the continuation of Knack’s Moonshot Campus Initiative in collaboration with Esther Wojcicki! This cohort is focused on creating cross-campus peer learning communities between students at 2-year colleges and students at 4-year institutions. Over the past nine years, Knack has helped establish peer learning programs at more than 100 colleges and universities. Now, we’re building on that foundation by introducing platform capabilities that enable meaningful cross-campus connections. By linking students from 2-year colleges with peer tutors attending neighboring 4-year institutions, we aim to bolster enrollment, improve academic outcomes, reduce transfer shock, and support postsecondary baccalaureate attainment. Learn more below!
