NASA and SpaceX are now targeting as soon as September 2025 for the launch of the agency’s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) spacecraft, which is currently undergoing integration and testing at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. The new date provides additional time for IMAP flight systems preparations prior to launch. jhuapl.link/jbs IMAP will study the heliosphere — the Sun's magnetic bubble that shields our solar system — to better understand the protective boundary. To achieve this, IMAP will sample, analyze and map particles streaming towards Earth from the edges of interstellar space. In a complex process that took over a year, engineers at APL pulled together IMAP’s instruments, subsystems and components and ran them through a gauntlet of tests to ensure mission success. Angela Sarich, an engineer at Johns Hopkins APL, has been honored by the National Defense Industrial Association - (NDIA) with the organization’s Bronze Medal Award, which recognizes outstanding science or engineering achievements in undersea warfare. https://jhuapl.link/u78 Sarich is a recognized thought leader and subject matter expert with more than 20 years of experience in undersea warfare, operations research, system evaluation, nuclear ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) operations and anti-submarine warfare operations. As program manager for Undersea Warfare Assessments in APL’s Force Projection Sector, Sarich led a team of analysts and worked with a variety of government agencies, such as the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations’ Undersea Warfare Division (OPNAV N97), the Navy Analytics Office, OPNAV Assessment Division, the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the Pacific Submarine Force and the US Navy Commander, Submarine Force Pacific to provide quantitative answers for Navy and combatant command decision makers. She is also assistant program area manager for the anti-submarine warfare program area at APL. Most recently, Sarich has focused on evaluating the effectiveness of existing and future Navy subsea and seabed warfare systems using processes she developed to identify and gather key information, operational objectives, and performance metrics.
