In 2024, the average monthly residential electric bill surged to $182 nationwide—the highest ever recorded by J.D. Power—and customers aren’t happy. The J.D. The U.S. Lags in Digital Wallet Adoption: What's Holding Us Back? Despite the early introduction of digital wallets, the U.S. payments market remains fragmented and far from mature. According to J.D. Power data, digital wallet usage has plateaued at around 50% among consumers, and only 57% of small and midsize merchants accept them. This is surprising because leading players like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay offer functionality that spans web, mobile, and in-store channels. So, what’s holding back universal adoption and acceptance? As highlighted in the article, consumer concerns about security remain the biggest obstacle. This misperception underscores a critical opportunity: consumer education. Robust security is a core benefit of digital wallets, yet many consumers remain unaware. Why does this matter? Without greater consumer adoption, merchant acceptance will stagnate, and true universality—seamless, widespread use of digital wallets across all channels—will remain elusive.
