If it’s not an offer you would gladly sign yourself, then don’t expect someone else to. (PERIOD ⚫️) Teambuilding 101: Just because you enjoy working for yourself, having your own business, being an entrepreneur, it doesn’t necessarily mean your potential candidate feels the same way about “you”. If it were the other way around, would “you” really want to work with “you”? I don’t offer a contract, proposal, or job opportunity, that I wouldn’t gladly sign myself. ✍🏼 This is a simple formula that I use when drafting an offer👨🏻💻: 1. It must create SYNERGY between both parties that promotes growth, learning, and flexibility. 2. It must IMPROVE both parties financial, social, and brand (personal/business) position. 3. It has to be a “NO-BRAINER”. In other words: clear, simple, and have each party jumping to the signature line. Do you agree or do you use a different formula⁉️ I look forward to reading your response. If you enjoy this topic, please don’t forget to share and repost ♻️. #MoreThanBilingual #LiTranslators #Leadership #DoTheRightThing

Here’s what NOT to do when beginning your translation career 😅 ❌ Studying in a field other than translation only ❌ Acquiring experience in an unrelated field ❌ Sending agencies an unrelated CV That is how I got started 25 years ago, and I wouldn’t recommend it today. Since then, I have: ✔ Networked – a lot ✔ Studied under 2 mentors ✔ Acquired SOLID experience ✔ Applied specialities acquired in uni or developed through industry associations/events If I had to do it again, I would: 👉 Get a translation degree 👉 Join a professional association early 👉 Network, this time ‘flashing’ my credentials 👉 Acquire early experience through online platforms How did you get started? Special shoutout to Johnny Romero, CMI Spanish and Michael C Hillanbrand for their professionalism and kindness during that interview. — Check out my profile and join my community for more content on #LiTranslators and #interpreters

I didn’t build my company website until my 2nd year in business. 🤫 I’ve been in business now over 7 years and I stand by my decision. Building a cool website has NO value if you haven’t built your authority first. -FACT ✅ No, it wasn’t because I didn’t know how, I didn’t have the resources, or I didn’t have the money. It was simply because I wanted to build my authority first. Here are 3 things I did before I built my website: 🎯FIND THE RIGHT PEOPLE for my team. In the words of Jim Collins (Good to Great): “First who, then what” Once I had the right people “on the bus” 🚌, I knew I could go anywhere. 🎯BUILD MY COMMUNITY of language service providers. No gimmicks, no AI 🤖 generated DM’s, but real human relationships. This takes time, patience, and perseverance. 🎯BE CONSISTENT with my quality of language services for reliability and scalability. Train, work, sleep, repeat. This requires discipline and a high tolerance for pain. 🔁 Now you can please check out my cool website (link in comments)😉 If you found this post interesting, please share ♻️ #MoreThanBilingual #Language #Community #Leadership

If you advocate “a lot” as an Interpreter, you should change your profession. Yes, really… Now before you flood me with your comments and opinions (which I look forward to reading), let me establish a few foundational rules for this discussion: ☑️Advocacy- is the most invasive and least used role of the interpreter that is used only if and when necessary. ☑️National Guidelines- NCIHC: Suggests that an interpreter may act as advocate if they must “speak out to protect an individual from harm” or “to correct mistreatment or abuse.” ☑️Mislabeling- Clarifying or Culture Brokering are two separate, additional, roles of the Interpreter that should not be mislabeled as Advocacy. ☑️Bilingual Staff- Performing your normal responsibilities which may include care navigation or patient advocacy in a non-English language as a bilingual proficient is not the same as interpreting for two individuals that do not speak the same language. Ok, now back to our topic. In my opinion, as an Interpreter, the best Advocate is the one who rarely if ever has to. It’s not about you,..it’s all about them (Provider & LEP Client). Meaning that if you provide clear, accurate, and transparent communication in your primary role as a Conduit, advocacy should be a rarity. I’ve had the privilege of successfully providing accredited Medical Interpreter training to over 200 interpreters and counting. You may have many years of experience interpreting. In addition to being a bilingual proficient you may even have completed formal medical training as a Nurse, Physician Associate (PA), or Doctor. I’ve trained the full gamut of participants from the novice to expert and my answer to the question of “if and when an Interpreter should advocate⁉️” is the same: Just because an Interpreter “can” advocate doesn’t mean you “need” or should do it. The NCIHC and IMIA national guidelines for Interpreters are a great principle to follow. In short, unless you not speaking out is going to result in an individual suffering harm, mistreatment, or abuse, you should just interpret. If you enjoy advocating more and are a bilingual proficient, you should probably pursue becoming a bilingual care advocate/navigator instead. It would be much better for you to be a bilingual care advocate who occasionally provides interpretation (I can train you for that) versus being an Interpreter who advocates way more than is necessary or appropriate. Do you agree⁉️ YES or NO If you find this insightful, please share ♻️ #MoreThanBilingual #Interpreters #Translators #CodeOfEthics #Advocacy National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) IMIA Int'l Medical Interpreters Association
