Integrative symptom management is a different approach to integrative medicine. Much of integrative medicine is about prevention of disease - how can you argue with that? BUT if you feel nauseous and exhausted from chemo, have chronic pain that impacts your quality of life, or can't sleep because your brain won't turn off, prevention may not be the primary thing on your mind. There are many ways to add an integrative approach into your practice. 📌 You can do a 2 year fellowship: The Univ of Az has a robust, well-respected fellowship. If you want to pursue Board certification in integrative medicine you'll need to do a program like this. 📌You can take an academic program: The University of Maryland Graduate School has a 1 year academic program in integrative health. I teach in this program, and it's great. If you want academic credit you'll need this kind of program. 📌You can learn from me: Perhaps you aren't looking for Board certification or academic credit. If you just want to learn more evidence-supported, effective tools to help your patients (and yourself), check out the program below. It is cost effective and uber practical (no fluff) so you'll be able to implement new approaches right away. There is an option to learn in community if you don't want to take this journey alone. Transforming Palliative Care: Empowering Physicians and Palliative Care Teams with Integrative Solutions
About us
Welcome to the Integrative Palliative Institute. Our mission is to help clinicians and caregivers reduce stress, overwhelm, and feelings of losing themselves while caring for ill or aging people. We also assist palliative care organizations in differentiating themselves, attracting patients, and optimizing their clinical and administrative teams. We help our clients through online courses, coaching, consulting, speaking engagements, The Integrative Palliative Podcast, and Dr. Chiaramonte’s book, "Coping Courageously: A Heart-Centered Guide for Navigating a Loved One’s Illness Without Losing Yourself." We empower clinicians and caregivers with integrative approaches for symptom reduction, skills for difficult conversations, positive responses to stress, and micro-wellness tools to enhance their own wellbeing. For organizations, we provide strategies to boost referrals, expand patient care options, improve employee wellbeing, and increase team productivity. Conventional medical practice is powerful and essential but has its flaws. There's a better way to care for seriously ill patients and families while maintaining clinician and caregiver wellbeing. If you’ve always had a feeling that there is a better way to practice medicine, you’re right and you’re in the right place. Our mission is to provide you with the knowledge, tools, and resources to practice integrative palliative care, enhance your patient outcomes, and support your personal and professional growth and wellbeing. I just got back from teaching integrative palliative care to Johns Hopkins palliative medicine fellows. I so enjoy teaching integrative palliative care to medical learners. It’s my jam! 🙂 If your medical learners (physicians, NPs, PAs, home health aides, etc) would benefit from more tools to help their patients and more ways to attend to their own wellbeing, you know where to find me. #meded #physicianwellness #integrativepalliative #HAPC #HPM

How can we cope with deeply upsetting circumstances? In palliative care we help people cope with the emotional pain and fear of losing someone they love. Those same principles can help us cope with whatever deeply upsetting circumstances we find ourselves in. Have a listen. What would you add? You'll find the link in the comments. #coping #stress #stressmanagement

Helping people cope with deeply upsetting situations is what we do in palliative care. Here are some things that can help… 🔶 Allow the feelings in as you are able. You don’t have to flood yourself with the feels and you also shouldn’t permanently stuff them. All feelings are allowed - sadness, anger, disbelief, grief. 🔶 Don’t compare your insides to other people’s outsides. Everybody copes in their own way and that’s OK. 🔶 Use your senses to focus on the now. What do you hear, feel, see? Focus on the taste of your coffee or the softness of your puppy’s fur. Sometimes your “now” will include planning for the future. But don’t indulge your mind’s tendency to catastrophize about the future with “what if…” 🔶 Make a list of what you are grateful for - try to fill a notebook page. 🔶 Put good into the world or help someone else. Life is hard. And also beautiful. And also hard. We can’t choose what happens to us, but we can choose how we respond.

What causes near death experiences? Is it more like the last sputtering of a dying brain or a connection to the other side? I’ve had interesting experiences with my patients and even in my own life that make me think there is some kind of consciousness after our body dies. This article adds some interesting science to the conversation. What do you think? #neardeathexperience #NDE #death https://lnkd.in/ef8KJS9j

An incredible resource for blind people! Wow. I learned so much today. Today I interviewed Sara Freeman Smith who went blind in midlife and is now a disability advocate, author, coach and overall fabulous woman. Part of what we discussed was her new Rayban Meta Smart Glasses, which she is modeling below. They help her read her mail, take photos, and even walk her dog. How did I not know about this? I have no financial connection to the company - I just want to spread the word so more people facing blindness can benefit (and more clinicians can tell their patients). Have you tried them? Sarah's episode will be out next week and I'll share the link. For now, tell your blind friends and patients to check out her website for resources www.urgems.com. Here's the link for the smart glasses: https://lnkd.in/gG9XR_-h #blindness #urgems #disabilitysupport
