Better streets. Better cities. Better lives.
About us
Founded in 1985, the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) has become a leading organization in promoting environmentally sustainable and equitable transportation policies and projects worldwide. ITDP was created by sustainable transport advocates in the U.S. to counteract the export to developing countries of costly and environmentally damaging models of dependence on the private automobile. ITDP focuses on working with municipalities and non-governmental organizations in developing countries to implement projects that show how air pollution, carbon emissions, traffic congestion and accidents can be reduced, or how the basic mobility of the poor can be improved. ITDP primarily focuses on work in the following program areas: * Developing high-quality, low-cost mass transit * Planning and advocacy for cycling and walking * Strengthening the bicycle and rickshaw industries * Revitalizing city centers * Bridging distances: transport for healthcare * Managing traffic demand * Building institutional capacity to plan for and implement sustainable low-carbon transportation * Developing financing tools and incentives to improve transportation system performance and cut GHGs Our projects build local knowledge and skills while generating greater public awareness of viable sustainable transport solutions. They are also used to leverage additional resources from international development institutions, inspire these institutions to change their own priorities, encourage private sector participation, and encourage more participatory and transparent decision-making. ITDP is supported by a wide array of partners, working most closely with Climate Works and the Clinton Climate Initiative.

Over 1 billion people in the world have a #disability, and more than half of these people live in cities. #Transportation that is accessible to all—including and especially those with disabilities—is becoming increasingly more vital in a world where the number of disabled people is expected to triple by 2050. #DisabilityDay Our new illustrated brief, developed alongside our partners at Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Cities for All Through Universal Access, explores how urban design can make cities inclusive for everyone. ITDP is working tirelessly to help cities expand bus service, increase transport accessibility, and slash emissions. Cities, a major source of harmful emissions, must urgently intensify their efforts to combat greenhouse gases. That means prioritizing sustainable transport — especially buses— over fuel-intensive private cars. Give a #GivingTuesday gift now to help more people get on the bus! https://itdp.org/donate/

The adoption of the Ethiopia Urban Street Design Manual by the country's government is a big step towards accessible, safer, and greener streets! 🚲 🚶 🇪🇹
🚨 Major Milestone Alert! 🚨 We're thrilled to share that the Ministry of Transport and Logistics and the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure in Ethiopia have officially adopted the Ethiopia Urban Street Design Manual at the Ethio Green Mobility 2024 Symposium! 🌍✨ This manual is a major step forward, providing a comprehensive guide to creating safer, more accessible, and inclusive streets for Ethiopia's rapidly growing urban population. It’s all about designing streets that put people first! ITDP and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) are proud to have provided technical support throughout this journey, helping shape the future of urban streets in Ethiopia. In addition, the manual includes an elaborate website with a design tool and various design templates to guide the adoption process. The manual and tool are available here: https://lnkd.in/d6EedKJN Together, we're creating streets that serve everyone. #UrbanMobility #SustainableCities #GreenMobility #StreetDesign

As urban populations grow, local governments must increase investments into active mobility infrastructure to ensure jobs, schools, healthcare, and other destinations are made accessible to all, while also reducing #carbonemissions. Access the beta version of the tool at https://bit.ly/3AOvIfe With the newly released Cost-Benefit Scoping Tool for Cycling Infrastructure, developed by ITDP and our partners at The World Bank, investors, as well as national and city governments, can evaluate costs and the full range of benefits offered by investments in #cycling.
