Happy Friday, Insider Fam! A couple of insights about hiring for skills. There has been a growing trend to hire for skills. This has become more prevalent because of the qualified worker shortages in the past couple of years. If you have the skills required for a job be prepared to be tested on your skills as employers try to ascertain your skill level. You may also have to convince team members on the interview team as well that you have reliable skills to bring to the table. From Fortune Magazine: Skills assessments. With more employers around the world embracing skills-based hiring, could résumés become a thing of the past? About three-quarters of companies test job seekers’ skills multiple times along the interview process, according to a global survey of 3,000 employers and workers. Organizations that use skills-based hiring and recruiting methods cite significant benefits, including saving on hiring costs, spending less time hunting for candidates, and limiting the number of unsuitable hires. From Fast Company: Barriers to employment. Many employers are no longer requiring job applicants to hold a college degree. Yet despite the global trend toward skills-based hiring, nontraditional and diverse candidates still face substantial challenges. A study of 2,000 US employers found that nearly 75% are focusing on skills when recruiting for some roles. But even when companies have inclusive hiring practices, HR managers who insist on certain requirements may still present a barrier to hiring underrepresented workers, according to the survey. Have a wonderful weekend. Enjoy! Happy Holidays & Monday Insider Fam! What do you think about this? This has been true for years in the Tech Sector but is more recent in other industries. Workers can see when looking to gain more experience or a salary bump a move is needed. Gone are the days of employers padding their employee rosters. JOB HOPPING, NOT PROMOTION, DRIVES CAREER GROWTH, ANALYSIS SHOWS by G. Christ, Editor, Dive Brief, 12.3.24 Only 17% of workers were promoted by their current company over the last five years, a recent report revealed. Fifty-eight percent of Americans have changed jobs rather than wait for a promotion in the last five years, according to a Nov. 26 report by Kickresume, an online resume builder. In an analysis of 1,250 active LinkedIn profiles, KickResume found that only 17% of workers were promoted by their current company over the last five years. Those who changed employers switched companies an average of 2.7 times over the five-year time period, or once every year and five months, Kickresume found, while workers who were promoted waited an average of two years and four months. All told, 65% of workers have switched jobs in the last 5 years, either internally or by changing companies, per the report. Kickresume said that number may have been boosted by COVID-19-related layoffs during the period analyzed. Martin Poduška, editor in chief and resume writer at Kickresume, identified factors like at-will employment, the corporate ladder structure and economic problems as reasons for frequent job switching in the U.S. “There have always been two paths to progress in a career — you either get promoted or start looking for a new job. However, our new survey suggests that for workers in today’s United States, only one of those paths seems to remain open,” Poduška said in a statement. “If the promotion’s out of your reach, switching jobs may be the best way to progress in your career,” Poduška said. Promotions, Poduška said, are rarer than people think. One factor could be if an employee works in the office or not, according to a recent survey by United Culture. More than a quarter of the 1,000 workers surveyed who work remotely some of the time said they thought they missed out on a promotion or work opportunity because of it. That sentiment was higher among older Generation Z and millennial workers, the survey results showed. Mary Crossan, professor of strategic leadership at Western University and author of a recent report on character-based hiring and promotion published in MIT Sloan Management Review, said companies should consider character when promoting or hiring someone. Doing so can lead to better returns and engagement and more effective leadership, the report found. #careercoach #coaching #podcast #women #womeninbusiness #womenempowerment #womencommunity #blackintech #blackwomeninbusiness #blackwomenintech #blacklinkedin #latinasinbusiness #latinasintech #latinasinstem #latinas #womenandgirls #womenhealth #womenhealthcare

Good Morning, Insider Fam! Hope your long holiday weekend was great! Here's the scoop on employee resignations Part 1. Resignation Trends Engage2Excel 11.16.24 Let’s face it, employee resignation is inevitable and can significantly impact organizational stability and productivity. Understanding the trends behind employees leaving and implementing effective retention strategies are crucial for maintaining a motivated and committed workforce. Resignation Trends – there is a laundry list of reasons employees leave their jobs. So many trends are synonymous with the post-pandemic job market, like quiet quitting and great resignation. Our Job Seeker Survey and Research see the three most common reasons employees cite for leaving their jobs: 1. Lack of Career Growth – Employees increasingly seek professional development and career advancement opportunities. Stagnation in roles, lack of promotion opportunities, and inadequate training drive employees to search for better growth prospects elsewhere. 2. Fair Compensation – Salary is a significant factor for many employees. If they feel like they are not being fairly compensated for their work, they might decide to move to a company that offers better pay and benefits. 3. Feeling Underappreciated or Undervalued – Employees want to feel that their contributions are recognized and valued. If they feel like their efforts are going unnoticed or underappreciated, they may seek a workplace where they feel more valued and respected. Retention Strategies – these are key to addressing the reasons for resignation: For Lack of Career Growth Opportunities 1. Career Pathing and Development Programs: Clearly define career paths and provide training, mentorship, and development programs to help employees grow within the company. 2. Internal Promotions: Promote from within whenever possible to show employees that their hard work can lead to advancement. 3. Continual Feedback and Goal Setting: Regularly discuss career goals with employees and provide feedback and resources to help them achieve them. Happy Monday, Insider Fam! Taking things too personally at work? Forbes recommends: Stop taking work too personally. With so much of our lives invested in our careers, it’s easy to see why work can become such a defining aspect of our identities. While it’s common to equate our personal value with our professional performance, it’s important to step back and gain perspective on how to take things less personally. #careercoach #coaching #podcast #women #womeninbusiness #business #womenempowerment #womenatwork #womencommunity #blackintech #blackwomeninbusiness #blackwomenintech #blacklinkedin #latinamerica #latinasinbusiness #latinasintech #latinasinstem #latinas #womenandgirls #womenhealth #womenandgirlsinscience #womenhealthcare

Happy TGIF, Insider Fam! Speaking of women in AI… a new report is looking at the gender gap in AI, and the results are stark: 71% of the AI-skilled workers are men and 29% women. One of the report’s more sobering insights is that female workers often receive less priority in accessing AI tools on the job—a trend that will have a dampening effect on innovation and economic opportunity (for all people and companies, not just women) if it continues.
