So much of the discourse surrounding value-based care focuses on primary care. And for good reason — primary care significantly impacts overall health outcomes and total cost of care. But the next frontier, according to the Healthcare Transformation Task Force, is specialty care. Their latest report points out that specialty care drives a substantial portion of healthcare spending, making it crucial for achieving VBC goals. We're excited about this new focus. Integrating specialties into VBC models is essential for creating a truly comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare ecosystem. Major kudos to the team at Innovista Medical Center's Mesquite, TX location! This extraordinary group screened nearly 60 patients for diabetic retinopathy last week, helping close gaps for those at risk. Left undiagnosed and untreated, diabetic retinopathy can lead to blindness. Our teams at Innovista Medical Center give people the resources they need to *prevent* major health issues before they occur — in addition to providing high quality care. There's new data out on CMS's Oncology Care Model (OCM) evaluation. Here's what you need to know: 1. Impact of two-sided risk: Practices that engaged in two-sided risk achieved net Medicare savings of $299.6 million. These practices not only excelled financially but also met the highest quality thresholds. 2. Quality vs. cost efficiency: While OCM successfully reduced costs, it fell short of improving overall care quality. The model primarily succeeded in lowering payments for higher-risk cancer types by promoting the use of more cost-effective supportive care drugs. 3. Future directions: The findings emphasize the potential for future models, such as the Enhancing Oncology Model (EOM) to build on OCM's lessons and improve qualtiy and cost efficiency in oncology care.
