If you've ever played a war strategy game and pressed pause to give yourself a force generation advantage over the AI enemy, or rushed an offensive on the enemy's air bases to deny their airpower, this study by the The Stimson Center is for you. If you haven't, it's nevertheless an important read in highlighting the contemporary vulnerability of fixed air bases and 'delicate' air assets, while also illustrating the importance of austere operational capabilities in runway-denied environments. 'Cratering Effects: Chinese Missile Threats to US Air Bases in the Indo-Pacific' examines how missile attacks on US air bases in Japan and the Pacific could prevent US fighter operations for up to 12 days in Japan, and two days in Guam initially, but the disruption could last much longer by targeting aerial refueling operations. Missile attacks could close runways for over a month in Japan and over half a week in other Pacific bases, severely limiting US aircraft range and effectiveness. This would force allied bombers to operate from more distant bases, reducing sortie rates and response times. Addressing this threat is critical for the United States Air Force and allies to maintain operational effectiveness in a conflict. From an Australian and regional perspective, the study can be viewed in context with the Journal of Indo-Pacific Affairs' paper (https://lnkd.in/g3upjuhc) dual grand strategies that the government is developing in balance-of-power and regional engagement. The BOP strategy, in particular, with its agile but high-end multirole force structure is designed to permit austere, remote, and deployed operations - bolstered with emerging technologies. The Stimson Center study can also be read online at: https://lnkd.in/gvRQ589d, by authors Kelly Grieco, Hunter S., and Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan M.
