Taking the pulse conveys heartbeat, life. Quality of care and patient safety are alive and kicking across Europe for sure. Thanks to the WHO Regional Office for Europe Quality and Safety Office in Greece for the kind invitation to review months ago the document launched today in Athens. A privilege for sure. Thanks also to the other reviewers Stefan Larsson and Niek Klazinga. You can see the ‘Taking the Pulse on Quality of Care and Patient Safety across Europe’ report here https://lnkd.in/eSRVHPw6 Congrats to JOAO BREDA , Liesbeth Borgermans , Válter R Fonseca and the entire team for an unprecedented report that provides solid grounding for learning and improvement across the region. My brief remarks today during the launch highlighted some of the unique features of the report as well as commending the 10 clear actions suggested based on findings. I also invited participants from Member States to: - Own it: as all improvement is local and they’d know best what dialogues to convene to trigger action - Act: avoiding paralysis by analysis and fully aware of the ‘this data is just not right’ argument potential, as well as encouraging everyone to commit to both narrowing the bell curve in areas of huge variation (like maternal mortality with 60x variation) whilst moving it ‘left’ (everyone improves)…as well as committing to using data over time to set up thriving learning and improving systems - Generate light, not heat (with their country data) - to frame continuous learning and improvement dialogues and collective action Finally I encouraged them to frame a common dream - improved quality and safety leading to stronger quality management systems to measurably improve outcomes for all. In other words, pursuing universal health coverage with universal quality and safety. Look forward to learning from the ongoing work around this locally and regionally over the coming months and years. Paulo Sousa Ellen Joan van Vliet Kris Vanhaecht Dr Charlotte Refsum M. In a powerful closing keynote address at IHI Forum 2024, IHI President Emeritus and Senior Fellow Don Berwick shared the stage with his daughter, Jessica Berwick, MD, who serves as a hospitalist at Mass General Brigham. The father-daughter duo traded heartwarming stories of their time scaling treacherous mountain peaks in the middle of winter, as Don recalled the grit and determination displayed by a then 15-year-old Jessica in choosing to push on and summit the mountain despite the looming threat of a blizzard. Don praised Jessica for her steadfast determination—even at a young age—and described her as a "steel beam of the family" and a world class doctor. Don and Jessica went on to introduce the central topics of their keynote address: the culture of medicine, systems barriers, and the changes we need to make to improve care delivery for all. Jessica shared poignant examples from her work as a clinician on how capacity issues at her hospital and the rigid claims approval process has, on several occasions, led to patients being denied access to the critical care they need, many times leading to new conditions developing that were not present at the time of arrival. Don criticized what he called the "financialization" of medicine, questioning how we have come to the point where over 100 million people in America are saddled with health care debt—the largest cause of bankruptcy in this country. He praised the new wave of frontline health care workers who are standing up to the growing influence of private equity and taking back control of their work. At the conclusion of Don and Jessica's powerful keynote, IHI Interim CEO and COO Melissa Panagides-Busch delivered her closing remarks after what was a momentous four days of learning, growing, challenging ourselves, and pushing the improvement conversation forward at IHI Forum 2024. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's IHI Forum one of the most successful in history. None of this could be possible without the generous support of our partners and the tireless work of all of the IHI staff members around the world. And, of course, there would be no IHI Forum without the hundreds of incredibly passionate and dedicated improvement professionals that attend the conference year after year—from session and poster presenters to experienced QI vets and IHI Forum first-timers—you are the reason we continue to push for better health and health care for all. Thank you for sharing our mission after all these years and we look forward to seeing you all at the 2025 IHI Forum in Anaheim, CA, USA!

"What is it that attracts us to misinformation?" In her Wednesday morning keynote address at IHI Forum 2024, Dannagal Young, Professor of Communications and Political Science at the University of Delaware, challenged us to examine what leads people in this country to fall into the trap of misinformation. She reflected on her experience searching for ways to cope with her late husband Mike's shocking diagnosis of craniopharyngioma, a rare type of brain cancer, and how she gained a sense of control and community in online chat rooms that spread harmful misinformation. Dr. Young described how her close friends were instrumental in rescuing her from the dangerous game of alternate truth-seeking and helping to create a sense of community for her and her husband during these challenging years. She spoke about regaining her control in the situation through the help of friends and family, understanding the science, and placing her trust in the medical experts. Before the keynote, IHI Fellow John Krueger MD, MPH and the team at The Chickasaw Nation Department of Health were recognized for their outstanding work in health care quality improvement. IHI President and CEO Dr. Kedar Mate awarded the team honorary "Blue Shirts" as a token of our deep appreciation and respect for the important work they do.

"Our mission for the health of this country and the health of the world is too important to get intimidated." Dr. Anthony Fauci took the stage at IHI Forum 2024 to share his story of resilience and ultimate dedication to science and the wellbeing of people all across the world. He spoke with IHI President Emeritus and Senior Fellow Don Berwick about the "many hats" he's worn throughout his 50-year career in medicine—from his time as a scientist and clinician to his role as the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and being coined "America's Doctor." Dr. Fauci took us back to the onset of the AIDS epidemic when he made the decision to bring vocal activists groups into the halls of the NIAID to join the discussion on clinical trials for the treatment of the disease. As the first government official to welcome activists into the discussion, Dr. Fauci demonstrated to the scientific community at the time how empathy for the patient is an essential aspect of health care policy. He shared with us how he developed his resiliency during his early years as a resident working at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, managing a number of cases simultaneously while working through the nights and weekends. Through those immensely challenging years as a resident, Dr. Fauci developed his fierce drive to advance the wellbeing of patients everywhere, no matter the backlash. Thank you to Dr. Fauci for your lifelong dedication to the pursuit of truth, bridging the gap between activists and the scientific community, and fearlessly guiding us through some of the biggest challenges in the history of public health.

Thanks to Jay Kumar for his writeup on Kedar and Thomas Lee's Tuesday morning keynote address that kicked off IHI Forum 2024. Check out the full article via Patient Safety & Quality Healthcare: https://go.ihi.org/3ZtEqI2
Great keynote address at the IHI Forum this morning by outgoing IHI CEO Dr. Kedar Mate and Thomas Lee, MD, chief medical officer at Press Ganey, about the importance of social capital in healthcare. The idea is to build up social connections with patients, staff and co-workers, which then leads to improved trust and performance. "You can get money from the outside. No one can give you teamwork and trust. Money cannot produce the things we're talking about here."

"We will not rest until everyone has the best care and the best health care possible." In his final address as IHI President and CEO, Dr. Kedar Mate took the stage at IHI Forum 2024 to deliver a moving keynote address on kindness, community, and connection. He shared the story of his 11-year-old son Bodhi—an honest, energetic, and passionate kid whose behavior in recent months has been plagued by the effects of anxiety. Kedar spoke about how the simple question, "Do you need to be helped, heard, or hugged?" created the space for Bodhi to open up about his feelings and improve the way he interacts with his community at school and family at home. Kedar was joined onstage by Thomas Lee, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Press Ganey, for a discussion on the value of social capital—or the way people interact with each other and their infrastructure—and how we must treat respect with the same level of importance with which we treat hand hygiene in health care organizations. Described as "a new frontier in quality" in Kedar's 2023 Forum keynote, IHI Care Operating System (IHI CareOS) is a new offering from IHI that leverages decades of experience applying quality improvement methods to transform the experience of health care delivery. A Spotlight Session about this innovative new approach will take place tomorrow and is available with livestream access: SP05: Embedding Quality and Safety within Clinical Operations: How the Care Operating System Approach Designs Systems to Transform Health Care Delivery. IHI, together with the National Steering Committee for Patient Safety, has released a newly updated Self-Assessment Tool and User Guide to complement Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety. The tool is designed to be an effective method for health care organizations in any care setting to self-assess and continuously improve foundational areas that are essential for patient safety. IHI has also released a new toolkit to equip nursing leaders with actionable insights and strategies to redesign care delivery and promote a thriving nursing workforce. Transforming Health Care Through Innovative Nurse-Led Care Delivery Solutions: A Toolkit for Transformation was developed as part of a 22-month project that was generously funded by the Johnson & Johnson Foundation.
