Planning for a Sustainable Future - HARC Takes a Walk on the Wild Side🐅 The HARC Executive Team and board members came together at the Houston Zoo’s Nau Family Gorilla Treehouse conference space last week for an inspiring two-day session focused on setting bold, transformative goals for HARC’s future. Through collaborative strategizing and in-depth planning, we discussed key objectives in climate action, water management, energy, community resilience, and policy, along with fundraising goals to expand HARC’s impact. We are thrilled to embark on this new chapter in 2025, and are energized by the opportunities ahead to make a meaningful impact on our community.  A special thank you to the Houston Zoo for graciously hosting us in such a beautiful venue that reflects our shared commitment to conservation and sustainability. We are ready to make #communitychange! I’m thrilled to announce that Air Alliance Houston was selected for a Track II Community Change Grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to improve policy and decision-making across the Texas Gulf Coast. We’ll be joined in this work by four incredible partners: Coalition for Environment, Equity and Resilience (CEER) Community In-Power and Development Association, Inc. (CIDA) HARC | Houston Advanced Research Center Ingleside on the Bay Coastal Watch Association (CWA) 👏 Thank you to the EPA, to our collaborators, and to the Houston area community who have been joining us time and time again to speak out and for our right to breathe clean air. With that said..... The Community Change Grant Program (and virtually all federal #environmentaljustice efforts) have come under intense scrutiny from the incoming Administration, making the future of these programs and funding uncertain. We must do all we can to honor this historic investment in the public health of historically overburdened communities and achieve #CleanAirForAll. HARC making waves in our nation’s capital! 🌍 Dr. Margaret Cook, Deputy Director for Climate Equity and Resilience at HARC, recently spoke on the panel Regional Clusters as a Blueprint for Growth at Deploy24, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in Washington D.C. The conversation explored how regional collaboration—bringing together industry, government, and nonprofits—can drive the transition to a sustainable energy future, while strengthening local communities. Dr. Cook shared insights on the importance of aligning decarbonization efforts with community resilience, ensuring that growth not only mitigates climate challenges but also benefits the people it impacts the most. HARC’s participation in Deploy24 underscores our commitment to fostering climate equity, advancing research, and making science actionable for all. Highlights from HARC at Energy LIVE🌟 HARC was invited to participate at Energy LIVE, hosted by Reuters Events, to be a key part of the important conversations about how sustainable energy shapes a low-carbon, equitable future. HARC's Micalah Spenrath, MS, PMP contributed to the discussion panel on post-election energy transition policies. The panel dove into anticipated changes and insights post-election, discussing how policy can drive progress. HARC’s Ebrahim Eslami, Ph.D. chaired the first day of the event, guiding critical discussions around clean energy. He also contributed to a dynamic panel discussion exploring the relationships between government, consumers, and industry. The panel delved into how industries can adapt to meet the increasing energy demands driven by emerging technologies. Vanessa Hulse, HARC’s Science Policy Fellow with the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, participated in the Eisenhower High School’s Green Career Fair, hosted by Children's Environmental Literacy Foundation on November 20th. Ms. Hulse hosted a table and spoke to small groups of students about HARC’s mission and vision for an equitable and sustainable future.
