Grateful to Jeff Smythe and ARCHI for their work on health and housing! To note from the interview, there have been 30,000 Atlantans who have applied for emergency rental and utility assistance in the past 20 months through ARCHI's common application portal - which is progress with fewer people spending hours trying to identify nonprofits to apply to and submitting various applications. However, only 10% of the needed assistance has been funded, due to limited resources. And for 70% of the applicants, this was the first time they were facing this situation of housing insecurity.
Finding stable, affordable housing is harder than ever for Americans. Housing is a huge challenge—not just because it shapes people’s sense of identity and dignity, but it also directly affects their health and well-being. According to Jeff Smythe at ARCHI , if you want better health outcomes, housing has to be a priority. That’s why ARCHI works with health systems to integrate housing into their strategies. Four projects have been permitted under the City of Decatur's relatively new 'missing middle ordinance' which allows for some duplexes, triplexes and quadplexes in previously single family only housing districts. In this article, Decaturish.com reminds us that the purpose of the ordinance was to "preserve an inclusive community and diversity of housing and people, create housing choices at varied incomes, increase the supply of smaller housing units, and encourage subsidized and market-rate housing to diversify housing prices."

HouseATL is working on a number of state policy issues this year, under the leadership of its Policy Working Group and the Co-Chairs, Chelsea Arkin and Kristin Allin, as well as the guidance and advocacy of Elizabeth Appley. Sustaining and growing the Georgia Housing Voucher Program is one of those critical issues - one that many people are less familiar with. Thank you to the SaportaReport and the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta for giving us the platform to explain why this program can reduce chronic homelessness and increase the quality of life for extremely vulnerable people.

Here's an uplifting home repair story from HouseATL member, Nehemiah Project Community Development Corp...
Transforming Communities to Impact Generations! Ellen’s Story of Resilience and Legacy Maintaining safe, functional homes for longstanding residents is vital to preserving community heritage. Through the Nehemiah Project Community Development Corp (CDC), home repair programs empower individuals like Ms. Ellen to sustain their homes and maintain their connection to their neighborhoods. Ellen’s family has lived in Fulton County for over 100 years, contributing significantly to its development. Her father, who helped pave local roads, left a lasting legacy. In 2009, he chose the family home as a cornerstone for their future, though he passed away before moving in. Ellen embraced the home as a foundation for her family’s legacy. By 2019, Ellen sought home repairs while balancing caregiving responsibilities for her aging mother and two daughters, one of whom has special needs. Her mother’s injury, however, shifted her focus, delaying necessary improvements. In 2024, Ellen turned to the Nehemiah Project CDC, an organization committed to supporting residents in maintaining safe and sustainable housing. Ellen received critical home upgrades: *Installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors *Two accessible grab bars *New bathroom faucets and accessible toilets These repairs improved safety, reduced water bills, and significantly enhanced her daughter’s independence, enabling her to navigate the home with greater ease. Ellen’s story reflects the profound impact of home repair programs. Beyond improving living conditions, these programs preserve multigenerational legacies and strengthen communities. The Nehemiah Project CDC ensures that residents like Ellen can remain in their homes and thrive, safeguarding the heritage of those who came before them. #Legacy #ImpactingGenerations #NehemiahProect
