We put our brains together for a day of creativity and sharing during our Community Learning Fair. The knowledge and know-how of our employees and residents wowed us! What did we get up to? Residents at Atria Ironwood Estates tried a new method of ornament making. There was a flurry of activity at Holiday Woods at Canco as residents learned new card games, attended a bow tying workshop and tried out virtual reality goggles! At Atria The Court at Brooklin, residents presented on their areas of expertise including Patricia who shared music and songbooks she's written. Happy 65th anniversary to Joe and Joanne! 👰♀️🤵♂️ Their honeymoon had an unconventional start with a stowaway in their car. "I heard a noise in the backseat of our car, so I pulled over," Joe says. "I opened the back door to find one of my wife's brothers lying down. I asked, 'What are you doing?!' and he said, 'You don't think I'm going to let you go alone with my baby sister, do you?'" Joe laughs. After that, it was smooth sailing as their beautiful marriage grew. "Our best advice is to always communicate and show love by doing little things for one another," Joanne shares. Now residents of Holiday Maple Suites, they enjoy time with their children and going on outings or watching performances with their friends and neighbors.

"I had some of the best times of my life taking care of children with disabilities," recalls Leola, a resident at Holiday Garden Village. For 18 years, Leola worked with students of all ages, helping them prepare for their futures. "I felt I was able to make a big impact, especially when I had nonverbal children. I had to create and implement specialized curricula that all the children could understand and learn from," she says. It was work that made a difference in the lives of her students. "It was rewarding when I would receive invitations to former students' graduations." Thank you, Leola, for supporting students' growth and success!

Sister, sister! "I used to come have lunch with my sister Lynn about once a month, and now we have lunch together every day," shares Pat, a new resident who decided to move into Holiday Durham Regent, where her sister has lived for more than three years. Lynn adds, "We are close enough to each other to help each other when we need it, but we have our own space when we need it. I already enjoyed the crafts programs and the friends I've made, but having my sister here with me makes it even better." "Living in the same community as a family member is great because you have support from each other," says Pat. "Also, you will already know someone when you move in." We love the built-in friendship that comes with being neighbors with your sibling!
