HxA empowers academics to advance open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement across higher ed.
About us
Heterodox Academy (HxA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit membership organization of thousands of faculty, staff, and students advocating for policy and culture changes that allow universities to be truth-seeking, knowledge generating institutions grounded in open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement. HxA empowers members to advance change on their campus, educates academics on the importance of our principles, and advocates for policies to protect open inquiry across higher education. Founded in 2015 by Jonathan Haidt, Chris Martin, and Nicholas Rosenkranz, HxA has been working for nearly a decade to educate academics about the value of viewpoint diversity in research and teaching, and create campus cultures in which open inquiry thrives. With over 50 HxA campus chapters and members at more than 1,800 institutions, HxA continues to advance its mission through its commitments to truth-seeking, courageous curiosity, and a belief in the potential of our institutions of higher education.

From our new periodical inquisitive, when Institutional Review Boards go wrong: "IRBs should of course minimize risk to human research participants. But they also should support research nimbly and expansively. That’s not happening." — Peggy Mason #AcademicFreedom #EducationReform #Research #Educationquotes #Academicnews

🦃 This Thanksgiving, we're grateful for the institutions that champion open inquiry, constructive disagreement, and viewpoint diversity in service of seeking knowledge and truth. 🎓 We're also grateful for the academics who promote these values, without which our institutions can't thrive. If you're feeling grateful too, become an HxA member (for free! https://hubs.li/Q02ZM4Nw0) or donate to support our mission (https://hubs.li/Q02ZMbfm0). May your Thanksgiving be filled with gratitude, connection, and maybe a little constructive disagreement too. #HigherEducation #AcademicFreedom #EducationReform #Academicnews #CanadianUniversities

University administrations should be standing up for academic freedom, but UNT’s misinterpretation of Texas law is threatening academic freedom instead. The University of North Texas' chief compliance officer is claiming professors may have to alter their course content and research projects to comply with a Texas law. But the law itself states otherwise. It's not enough to oppose illiberal trends in academia—we must also pave an alternative path. HxA's Segal Center fellows like Colleen P. Eren, PhD are using research to highlight that path. 🎓 Share this post if you think more academics should join the movement for academic freedom. 📌 Want to get paid to research the creation of a more heterodox culture in academia? Do you see disagreement as always negative or potentially positive? 🎓 Especially in the classroom, respectful debates can develop more nuanced understanding, enhance communication skills, and teach us to examine issues from multiple perspectives. Unfortunately, our recent surveys show that students are increasingly uncomfortable speaking freely during classroom discussions, leading to less opportunities for constructive disagreement. #AcademicFreedom #InstitutionalNeutrality #EducationReform #HigherEducation #Educationquotes #Viewpointdiversity

🚨 A troubling situation is brewing at the University of North Texas. Its chief compliance officer has erroneously invoked a state law to offer guidance to faculty regarding research and course instruction, threatening academic freedom.
