My mother grew up on a farm in rural Texas and got her education in a one-room school house. Despite financial hardship, parents with minimal education, and multiple systemic barriers, she wouldn't let anything stop her from getting a college degree. She graduated at age 20 with a double major in mathematics and secondary education and a double minor in biology and German. She began a lifelong career as a programmer with a job writing code for geophysicists, as a woman from humble means... in 1959! Her tenacity for pursuing higher education has been a compass for my siblings and me, and she worked tirelessly to ensure that we would all have the opportunity, support, and guidance necessary to achieve our goals. This past January, I had the honor of becoming the Executive Director of Elevate Tutoring, a Bay Area organization that provides scholarships and wraparound resources to low-income, first-generation college students, then empowers them to pay it forward as free STEM tutors and near-peer mentors to underserved K-12 students. This end of year giving season, I’m rallying my community to collectively sponsor an $8,000 scholarship for one of our college students. Any amount you can give makes a difference. I had a female boss tell me that I was bossy, selfish, and impolite. I responded with "You mean I'm assertive, confident, and direct? ...Yeah - it's true." I also wanted to say "And, what's your point?" but held back lest I be called impolite. It comes as no surprise that men fill more leadership roles because more ‘masculine’ traits are placed at a higher value in the workplace. When we perpetuate this we end up with stats like this: -Women make up almost 60% of the workforce, but only one-third of the twenty-seven million firms in the US are led by women.  -Less than 6 percent of leaders at the three thousand top companies in the US are women  But we all want the same thing, right? We want the best person for the job. We all want the opportunity to be considered on a level playing field. So let's shift the way we subconsciously gender leadership characteristics. When we do that, we actually create a larger pool of candidates for the role we are filling, which leads to putting the best person in the role rather than someone we think fits our model of a leader. And you'll end up with a more dynamic, innovative, and profitable organization.
