Supporting Women in Law – From Graduation to Their First Legal Role 🎓👩🏻⚖️

About us

Her Legal Network was founded by Bridget Hayes and Emma Mainz to fill the gap in support for women law graduates. While groups exist for women in law at university and for established solicitors, there’s little available for those in the 'in-between' phase after graduation but before securing a training contract. We provide a welcoming, non-exclusive space where women law graduates can connect, share resources, and support each other without lengthy applications or annual fees. If you’re navigating the phase after university and looking for a community of women in the same boat, Her Legal Network is a space where we support each other as we take the next steps in our legal careers.

Yesterday, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Her Legal Network ‘s first panel and networking event with trainees and associates from firms such as Mayer Brown, Linklater's, Charles Russell Speechlys, Morrison Forester and VCCP. The phenomenal speakers were Preya Sutreja , Izzy MacKellar , Lois Child, Humna Zubair and @Christina Thompson The event started off with a panel discussion where the associates shared insights into how they distinguished themselves during the application process. What stood out to me was the diversity of their journeys—each had a unique story, yet there were common threads among them. Their experiences showcased that the application process is highly personal and tailored to individual strengths. A key takeaway for me was that law firms aren't necessarily looking for candidates who know everything; instead, they value individuals who are eager to learn, adaptable, and open to feedback. They want to see how you respond to challenges, take feedback constructively, and demonstrate determination to find the right solutions. It's less about having all the answers upfront and more about showcasing your potential to grow within their environment and overcoming challenges. There was also an emphasis on the idea that rejection is redirection. Resilience, a key skill that employers highly value, can often be developed through the experience of rejection. When going through application process, it’s important to accept that you might face setbacks. However, the key is to pick yourself up, learn from the experience, and keep pushing forward. Every rejection is an opportunity to grow and refine your approach, bringing you one step closer to success. They also mention Commercial Awareness: This is a term you'll hear repeatedly throughout your application journey, and for good reason. Most law firms want applicants to go beyond surface-level knowledge and provide multiple, well-rounded examples, rather than relying solely on mainstream or widely discussed ones. However your understanding of commercial awareness be easily developed through subscribing to platforms like Zip Law, which sends quick, updates straight to your email about recent events. Additionally, taking crash courses on resources like the Commercial Law Academy can help deepen your insight and keep you informed about current industry trends. Lastly, DONT BE SHY! Reach out to trainees on LinkedIn if you have questions, it was mentioned that 9 out of 10 times they'd respond. Networking is a powerful tool that can help you build meaningful connections and gain valuable insights into what the law firm you’re applying to values. Engaging with professionals not only enhances your knowledge but also demonstrates initiative and genuine interest, both of which are qualities that firms appreciate. Again, great thanks to the associates and her legal network for such a great successful event!
