"Everyone deserves a chance to fly... And if I'm flying solo, at least I'm flying free." Like Elphaba in Wicked, I’ve felt the pull of expectations and the weight of being misunderstood. Life’s “gravity”—fear, doubt, and the barriers society places in our paths—tries to keep us grounded, but I’ve learned that rising above isn’t about rebellion; it’s about determination, clarity of purpose, and the courage to keep moving forward. As CEO of HBCU 20x20 | The Application I’ve seen firsthand how creating opportunities can help others rise. Defying gravity means more than overcoming challenges — it’s about transforming obstacles into stepping stones and building systems that uplift entire communities. This work isn’t just about individual achievement; it’s about collective progress. When we invest in others, we create new pathways, expand possibilities, and inspire a shared ascent. The question we all face is this: What’s holding us down, and how can we rise above it? Together, we have the power to defy gravity, break through limits, and thrive. P.S. If you haven’t seen Wicked, add it to your list. It’s truly a masterclass in reimagining what’s possible.

Last week, we were honored to host Amgen for a strategic planning session as we prepare for the 4th year of our partnership through HBCU 20x20 | The Application November is a pivotal month for our organization— it’s when we focus on planning, strategy, and alignment for the upcoming year. Meeting in person allowed us to dive deeper, not only strategizing and refining plans but also analyzing what has worked in previous years, identifying opportunities for growth, and establishing clear metrics (KPIs) to measure success moving forward. Our collaboration with Amgen has been instrumental in connecting HBCU students and recent graduates to opportunities in the biotech industry, opening doors and creating impactful pathways through our fellowship programs. As we look ahead, we’re excited to expand this partnership and welcome Amgen on two of our #HBCU20x20 Tour stops, continuing to strengthen our commitment to building a legacy of opportunity and success for underrepresented talent.
