Did you know 330 Million people were eating biofortified crops by 2023? Thanks to the global push for biofortified crops, we’re making strides in nutrition: • 227 Million people are accessing biofortified foods in the market. • 103 Million are eating what they grow on their own farms. Together, that’s 330 million lives impacted by nutrient-rich crops like vitamin A-rich sweet potatoes and iron-fortified beans, supporting healthier futures for communities worldwide. Let’s keep growing this impact for a world where everyone has access to nutritious food! Improving nutrition and public health by developing and disseminating nutrient-rich staple food crops.
About us
The HarvestPlus mission is to improve nutrition and public health by developing and promoting biofortified food crops that are rich in vitamins and minerals, and providing global leadership on biofortification evidence and technology. HarvestPlus works across CGIAR as part of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). HarvestPlus and its partners develop new, more nutritious varieties of staple food crops that provide higher amounts of vitamin A, iron, or zinc, the three micronutrients identified by the World Health Organization as most lacking in diets globally. This process is known as biofortification. By 2030, we anticipate that 1 billion people will be benefiting from biofortified nutritious foods.

Hidden hunger: did you know that as of 2022, about 768 million people are undernourished according to the World Bank, with populations in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa being the most affected? 🤔 Committed to addressing nutritional challenges, Yara India has proudly partnered up with HarvestPlus Solutions to improve the nutritional quality of crops in rural communities, focusing on staple crops. The program pilot phase started with zinc wheat cultivation in five districts across Uttar Pradesh, India. 🌾 The NutriFarms program not only enhanced nutrition through better crops but empowered farmers to adopt advanced #RegenerativeAgriculture practices, helping to increase yield and resilience to environmental stresses. This supports food security and uplifts livelihoods in the community. ✨ As the program concludes, the bundling of biofortified seeds with smart zinc fertilizers led to a significant increase in zinc and iron content in the harvested crops. Additionally, participating farmers reported an average income increase of around 42%*! 📈 At Yara, we are committed to transforming agriculture from the ground up, focusing not just on yields but on the nutritional value of the food we grow. “This isn't just about increasing productivity; it's about cultivating a future where every harvest contributes to healthier lives and stronger communities,” said Sanjiv Kanwar, Managing Director, Yara South Asia. Join us on our journey to advance agricultural sustainability in Africa & Asia! 🌏🌍 Learn more 👉 https://lnkd.in/guPcTb3A *The figure provided is based on controlled, limited trials conducted with farmers, observed by field partners and enumerators.
