Hidden hunger: did you know that as of 2022, about 768 million people are undernourished according to the World Bank, with populations in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa being the most affected? 🤔 Committed to addressing nutritional challenges, Yara India has proudly partnered up with HarvestPlus Solutions to improve the nutritional quality of crops in rural communities, focusing on staple crops. The program pilot phase started with zinc wheat cultivation in five districts across Uttar Pradesh, India. 🌾 The NutriFarms program not only enhanced nutrition through better crops but empowered farmers to adopt advanced #RegenerativeAgriculture practices, helping to increase yield and resilience to environmental stresses. This supports food security and uplifts livelihoods in the community. ✨ As the program concludes, the bundling of biofortified seeds with smart zinc fertilizers led to a significant increase in zinc and iron content in the harvested crops. Additionally, participating farmers reported an average income increase of around 42%*! 📈 At Yara, we are committed to transforming agriculture from the ground up, focusing not just on yields but on the nutritional value of the food we grow. “This isn't just about increasing productivity; it's about cultivating a future where every harvest contributes to healthier lives and stronger communities,” said Sanjiv Kanwar, Managing Director, Yara South Asia. Who benefits most from biofortification? Biofortification is designed to help lower-income populations most vulnerable to micronutrient deficiencies, including young children, adolescent girls, and women of childbearing age. Regular consumption of biofortified crops can meet 40-100% of daily micronutrient needs. Plus, some varieties offer added benefits for women, like shorter cooking times for iron beans and higher dry matter content in vitamin A cassava.
