We've all been confused by them before... "best by", "use by", "enjoy by", "fresh through", "freeze by" and sometimes, even just a date with no words preceding it. These labels are confusing for consumers and also lead to a lot of unnecessary food waste. California is combatting this issue by narrowing it down for manufacturers. These are only ways to share dates with consumers: 🍎 "best if used by" to inform peak quality 🍏 "use by" to communicate product safety These new rules are hitting the shelves in July 2026! Copia was thrilled to be selected by the DNC as their food recovery partner. Every day of the week-long event, Copia facilitated donations of high-quality surplus food to nonprofits across Chicago. We were honored to be the trusted partner capable of streamlining the donations for such a massive national event. A special shout-out goes to the entire sustainability team at the DNC! To our partners Marley Finnegan (PURPOSE Net Zero), Stephanie Katsaros (Bright Beat), as well as Doug Bradley, and Tracy Cammack (McCormick), thank you for trusting us to make this happen. And of course, none of this would be possible without our amazing nonprofit partners, Fight2Feed, Yahna Awazu at Community Solutions of Illinois, Breakthrough Urban Ministries, Covenant House Illinois, Franciscan Outreach, Chicagoland Food Sovereignty Coalition (CFSC), and many more who helped distribute the food.
