  • A container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland this morning. This caused the bridge to collapse, and a mass-casualty event was declared. Multiple agencies are responding to assist with rescue efforts and to help remove the debris. The exact implications are unclear, but the port will be closed until recovery and clean-up operations are completed. The additional effects this will have on the supply chain are uncertain, but this represents a major shock to US shipping. The port of Baltimore is the 14th largest port in the country, handling over 10 million tons of cargo annually.

  • The USDA released their most recent citrus forecast last week on March 8th. The Florida all-orange forecast remains unchanged at 19.8 million boxes. 98% of the early/mid-season varieties are now harvested, with the Valencia orange harvest in its early stages. The current fruit size is below average and the current droppage is above average. The Florida grapefruit forecast dropped 8%, down to 2.2 million boxes. This decline was from the red varieties, which lost an estimated 200,000 boxes. California’s all-orange forecast rose 200,000 boxes from February to 46 million boxes. The next citrus forecast will be available on April 11th. See the full report here! https://ow.ly/g6PE50QQc3a

  • Red Sea Shipping Update: Unfortunately, the situation has not improved much. Cargo ships are still coming under attack as they transition the Red Sea. Rates have come down slightly from the large bump seen in January. This is partly due to the slowdown caused by the Chinese New Year but also because shipping companies have devoted more vessels for trips around Africa. This should provide more certainty to the industry but with an additional cost for the extra fuel and the ships needed. Transit times will also be higher due to the longer route. There have also been reports of cargo building up at origin ports waiting for an available vessel. Global Essence has experienced both delayed Estimated Time of Departure and extended voyage times, with the Estimated Time of Arrival being pushed back after departure.
