  • ❗ The Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany is proud to contribute an additional 9.7 million Euro to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights this year. 🤝 In a meeting today, the Director-General for International Order, United Nations and Arms Control, Katharina Stasch, spoke to UN High Commissioner, Volker Türk about the critical work of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and Germany's support to it. 🇩🇪 The additional German funding will go towards a number of work streams of the High Commissioner. While the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany placed a clear focus on the situation in Syria, it also dedicated funding for Yemen and other crises. 🏳️🌈 Moreover, the funding will contribute to gender equality and rights of LGBTIQ+ persons the Human Rights Council itself and the Treaty Bodies of the international human rights conventions. With regard to emerging challenges, Germany also provided resources to work on #ArtificialIntelligence and #HumanRights. 🥉 In total, the German Federal Foreign Office has contributed more than 20 million Euros to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2024. This currently makes Germany the third largest donor to the Office – a reliable partner and steadfast supporter of human rights in troubled times.

  • German Cyber Ambassador Maria Adebahr participated in the 9th substantive session of the Open-Ended Working Group on Cyber in New York on Dec. 2-6. 🇩🇪 Our message: an open, secure and safe cyberspace enables sustainable development and is central to the maintenance of international peace and security. We need a permanent UN Program of Action on Cyber. Three side events exemplified our commitment to building an inclusive cyberspace: 🌍 Implementing global cyber norms enables a safe digital transition. Unpatched vulnerabilities pose a direct threat. Our side event with interface (formerly SNV) and the Center for Cybersecurity Policy and Law highlighted how states can respond through coordinated vulnerability disclosure & advance responsible state behavior in cyberspace. 👩💻 #GenderMatters in international security. At our side event with Australia, we underlined the need to close gender digital divides, among others, to advance security in cyberspace. 🤝Inclusive Discussions. Together with Egypt, we co-hosted an event for African Diplomats to delve into the #OEWG process. We need to collaborate and jointly advance cyber matters with all African Union Missions in New York.

  • 💧 Water is not just another natural resource - Water is vital for life and is particularly affected by the effects of climate change. Yet it remains an underprioritized issue globally. To address this, the UN has appointed Retno L. P. Marsudi as its first Special Envoy on Water, a significant step in raising the global profile of water-related challenges. Ms. Marsudi, former Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, will advocate for water in international policy, focusing on SDG 6 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 🇩🇪 Germany has played a key role in the creation of this position, with a financial commitment of 500,000 € in 2024, underscoring the importance of water as a global priority. Germany is proud to be the largest donor to this initiative, providing essential financial and political backing for Ms. Marsudi’s work, especially in the lead-up to the UN 2026 Water Conference. 🤝🏼 Last week, our Ambassador in Geneva, Nikola Gillhoff, met with the Special Envoy to discuss our future cooperation. As the Special Envoy, Ms. Marsudi will drive high-level political engagement on water and promote coherence across the UN system and International Organizations. We are committed to supporting her mission and look forward to continued collaboration with Ms. Marsudi, UN-Water Chair Mr. Dr. Alvaro Lario and the UN Special Rapporteur for the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation, Mr. Pedro Arrojo-Agudo. 🌎 This appointment is a crucial step in elevating the global water agenda and creating synergies with climate, biodiversity, and food security. We look forward to a strong partnership leading up to the 2026 Water Conference! United Nations Water

  • 🌐 International Human Rights Day: Press Freedom protects truth. Press freedom plays a crucial role in protecting human rights. Journalists around the world are uncovering human rights violations-often under the most challenging conditions, also facing significant risks to their own safety and well-being. 2024 has been an especially dangerous year for media professionals: 📌 56 journalists were killed, and 548 media workers are currently imprisoned. 📌 Conflict remains a significant threat to their work. A free press is essential for informed societies—and for democracy. This makes it all the more critical to promote the safety of media professionals. Protecting human rights defenders who advocate for press and information freedom is therefore a top priority for us. We stand in solidarity with all those who fight for truth and justice, especially in crisis regions. Their courage deserves our highest respect and unwavering support. #HumanRights #HumanRightsDay #PressFreedom

  • The United Nations General Assembly consists of six main committees, each focusing on a specific global issue. The Third Committee #3C addresses human rights, social issues, and humanitarian affairs. It plays a key role in protecting individual rights and advancing social progress worldwide. Three key takeaways: 👉 3C advocates for the rights of vulnerable groups, including refugees, women, children, and marginalized communities. 👉 The committee ensures that UN human rights standards are upheld and promotes global cooperation in addressing violations. 👉 3C helps shape international policies on issues such as racial discrimination, freedom of expression, and poverty reduction. • We thank Bundesamt für Bevölkerungsschutz und Katastrophenhilfe (BBK) for their successful project activities in order to strengthen CBRN-emergency response and civil protection in Ukraine. The following article shows the full scope of the project: 👉 https://lnkd.in/evEEubZm 💡 The project constitutes one of the many ways in which Germany contributes to the full implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

  • On 4 December 2024, the Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) 2025 was launched in Geneva, Kuwait City and in Nairobi. At a time of growing crises, the GHO 2025 raises awareness of and support for the vital role of humanitarian action. Highlighting that 305 m people will be in need of humanitarian assistance, the GHO highlights the heavy toll of continued conflict e.g. in Sudan, Gaza and Ukraine and climate-induced shocks, e.g. in the Caribbean, Bangladesh and Niger on communities. Every 1 out of 5 children is now either living in a zone of conflict – or fleeing from it. Conflict-related sexual violence doubled in 2023 and was systematically used as a weapon of war in Sudan, and heavily impacted civilians in Ukraine, Haiti, Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, traumatizing some of the most vulnerable populations. This year’s overarching theme of the GHO 2025 launch is “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities”, drawing attention to the fact that the first response to every emergency is delivered by affected communities themselves, and the commitment of the global humanitarian community to support those on the frontlines of the world’s crises, especially at a time where civilians and humanitarian actors themselves increasingly are under attack. The GHO highlights the severe consequences that strict prioritization of life-threatening needs have had for communities on the ground, while demonstrating what responses the humanitarian community is realistically able to deliver. As funding cuts across the humanitarian system further reduce capacities to deliver large-scale operations on the ground, we look ahead to 2025 with determination: as the second-largest humanitarian donor, we believe it is key to ensure that we build a broad coalition of support to: (1) engage with conflict parties through humanitarian diplomacy, improving conditions for delivery of humanitarian assistance and ensuring assistance reaches those most in need; (2) increasing predictable, multi-year funding for the humanitarian system, incl. by engaging new partners and (3) improving coordination between donors, humanitarian partners, local and affected communities on the ground. Germany will continue to do its part and remains firmly committed to the most vulnerable – diplomatically, politically and financially. United Nations OCHA OCHA Financing and Partnerships

  • Let’s speak about Haiti 🇭🇹 The people in this Carribean island state are suffering heavily from insecurity. Germany is part of an international effort to mobilize help. 🚨Haiti is facing a devastating crisis, with extreme gang violence causing a humanitarian emergency. 🆘Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and over 5 million Haitians are in urgent need of assistance. 🇩🇪In response, Germany is contributing 10 million euros to the ➡️ Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti. The mission is mandated by the 🇺🇳UN Security Council to help restore security and stability. Led by Kenya, the MSS is working to end the violence and pave the way for a more peaceful and sustainable future for the people of Haiti. Get more information in our video 👇. • 🤝 UNESCO and the Greening Education Partnership at COP 29: Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience 📚 An important, however less known outcome of #COP29: for the first time, education was part of the official COP agenda. It is the first-ever COP Presidency initiative aimed at tackling synergies and complementarities between education, health, social protection, skills and jobs, with a special focus on #Children and #Youth. International Organizations, Multilateral Development Banks and international Climate and Environmental Funds are committed to it. Experts are convinced: #Education is a key enabler for innovative solutions to climate change. 🌍 Climate related disasters already disrupt the education of nearly 40 million children annually. Moreover, these impacts rather amplify already existing gender inequalities. The initiative recognizes the importance of greening education and aims at driving global cooperation to ensure that environmental literacy becomes an essential objective of education, and that school infrastructure is resilient and sustainable. The #GreeningEducationPartnership, OECD - OCDE and PISA met in Baku to discuss including questions in the PISA assessment related to environment awareness. 👩🎓 In the framework of COP 29, UNESCO and the Greening Education Partnership organized a High-Level Meeting on the Baku Initiative and a Ministerial Roundtable on Greening Education and Enhancing Climate Literacy Metric on 18 November 2024. 12 #BakuGuidingPrinciples on Human Development for #ClimateResilience were presented at the Conference. They aim at aligning Climate Action with #HumanDevelopment for a resilient future. They call for an integrated quality climate change education at all levels and regular assessments of students’ competencies to address climate change. The ambition is to build climate-resilient and low-carbon education systems. 📈 To this end, the guidelines recommend investing in entrepreneurship, innovation and talent for such new and green technologies with potential to create jobs. A strong focus is on strengthening adaptive social protection systems to build resilience, in particular for the most vulnerable. Priority in #ClimateAction should be given to children’s unique vulnerabilities, including communities and migrants affected by climate change. The guidelines end with a call for scaling up public-private, innovative and holistic financing solutions to enhance quality and equity of education, which are fundamental for the long-term sustainability of Climate Resilience. 👉 Find out more about the initiative here: https://lnkd.in/ebwzUN4x
