    "That word doesn't mean what you think it means." The word? Personalization. ARGH. Personalization is more than using replacement tags or variable fields or whatever your system calls them. Personalization is sending content that will actually matter to the person who receives it. Check out this email I got this morning. I so badly wanted to write back to ask if this is an example of the personalization of which he speaks. Because it's HORRIBLE. The whole email is horrible. I mean, what the heck is even happening here? My name in the subject line. Check. An emotional hook (and my name) in the first sentence. Fails the "so what who cares" test. Why even share that? Company name in the 3rd paragraph - and the 3rd paragraph is his pitch. This isn't a personalized email campaign. It's a poorly written cold email campaign. I've never heard of this person or this company before. Side notes: the e.e.cummings touch with the subject line (all lower case) is off-putting to me. Starting the second paragraph with a lower case letter - same. No unsubscribe link, either. Bad form. I could have overlooked these issues had the email had any value to me. Any value at all. No, thank you. I'm dead serious about that. What do you think personalization means? This?

That starts with today's release of Chapter 2. 3. Determine the most likely cause from those uncovered. 4. Build a plan to address it. 5. Execute on the plan. 6. Measure results and, if the problem is not impacted within a defined timeframe, return to Step 3 to try something else. (SPOILER ALERT: this team is measuring at the four-week mark in Chapter 10.)
