On my recent touchdown in Long Beach, California, I had the pleasure and honor of attending the 50th Anniversary of the IFSA (International Flight Services Association) held in concert with APEX (Airline Passenger Experience Association) and Future Travel Experience (FTE). Special thanks to Dr. Joe Leader, Paul Mills, Tim Zandbergen, and Dr Stathis Kefallonitis, for their leadership and contributions. It was great to see Canadian Business Hall of Famer Robert J Deluce, Executive Chairman of Porter Airlines Inc., who has led and fostered the aviation industry in Canada for decades. A heartfelt thank you to Panasonic Avionics Corporation for hosting the fantastic APEX After Party, and to Michelle D. and Gregory Denver Altom for being such gracious hosts of this industry-leading event. The event was regarded as a significant achievement, drawing more than 2,500 decision-makers from 90 airlines and featured a remarkable total of 262 exhibitors across three shows, highlighting the comprehensive range of the passenger experience. Thanks to FORMIA and John Horsfall for the stylish Roberto Cavalli amenities swag pack provided to moderators and speakers—a thoughtful gesture that complemented my role representing our International Aviation Waste Management Association (IAWMA) in moderating discussions on sustainability, including: Championing Sustainable Practices: How Caterers and Suppliers Make an Impact, explored achieving operational sustainability in catering while balancing profitability with environmental stewardship. Panelists Included: Olivia Stoll, Sustainability Manager, Flying Food Group Allison Budd, President & CEO, Air Fayre Iris Anna Groeneweg, Commercial Director, Foodcase International BV David Rodriguez, Retail on Board Manager, Alaska Airlines Michael Raasch, Chief Executive Officer, Omnevo The second panel, A Path to Greener Airline Inflight Services, explored innovations in sustainable sourcing, waste reduction, and best practices for environmentally friendly inflight services. Panelists Included: Paul Mills, Head of Inflight Services, Virgin Atlantic Holly Armstrong, Senior Manager Catering, United Airlines Paula Jansen, Director of Catering, Hawaiian Airlines It was also a real honor to attend the prestigious evening APEX/IFSA Awards Ceremony, celebrating excellence in the airline industry and recognizing outstanding contributions to enhancing the passenger experience; notable winners included: JSX for Best Inflight Connectivity Lufthansa for Best Inflight Entertainment Qatar Airways for Best Cabin Innovation (Q Suite Next Gen) Virgin Atlantic for Best Inflight F&B (signature Virgin Redhead Cocktail) Delta Air Lines with FORMIA for Best Onboard Amenity. Air France-KLM CEO Benjamin Smith received the distinguished APEX CEO Lifetime Achievement Award. The event also marked 50 years of collaboration between APEX and IFSA, celebrating innovation and excellence in onboard services. What a great bunch! GJ
