  • Happy Holidays! Firstbase Friday's IT Happens! Comical IT stories acquisition style! Post-acquisition life at Firstbase a now AppDirect company, hit the IT Specialist Kevin like a rogue Slack notification. First he was trying to help AppDirect merge G-suite instances and ran into a snag authenticating. Then it was John from HR: “Can’t log into Firstbase through AppDirect!” The problem? He was trying his Netflix password. Next, AppDirect Legal pinged him: “Can we do laptop retrievals in Antarctica now?” Kevin stared at his coffee, debating if it was too early for something stronger. Between password resets and global retrieval dreams, Kevin muttered, “One merger at a time, folks....”

  • Firstbase Friday's IT Happens! Comical IT stories brought to you! An IT specialist, let's call him Kevin, first Slack of the day... "can't login to the VPN" from a team member working remotely from her mountain cabin with a Wi-Fi connection that might as well have been powered by squirrels. Kevin fired off troubleshooting steps, knowing full well his team member's real issue was her penchant for keeping her router next to the microwave. “Try turning off the popcorn machine,” he joked, as he added her to the growing list of VPN woes. Meanwhile, Kevin received another email from HR: a remote employee who left three months ago still hadn’t returned their company laptop. The retrieval team’s attempts had been met with radio silence, except for one cryptic email: “Laptop? Oh, I think my kid’s using it for Minecraft.” After scheduling a retrieval box to be sent out (again), Kevin turned his attention to a new hire who needed their equipment shipped to Quebec Canada. Just as he finished configuring the zero-touch setup for their laptop, a third message popped up: “Zoom won’t work.” He muttered to himself, “Remote work—bringing new meaning to being everywhere and nowhere at the same time.” IT happens...

  • Planning for 2025? Updating devices? Should you consider upgrading to the M4? The decision to upgrade to the M4 will depend on several factors, including the nature of your team’s work and the lifecycle of your current devices. Here are some key reasons to consider upgrading: 1. Increased Performance: The M4’s advanced CPU and GPU make it an ideal choice for teams that need powerful compute capabilities, such as software developers, designers, and data analysts. 2. Apple AI: The new AI functionality can enhance productivity for knowledge workers, content creators, and anyone who needs to process large volumes of information. 3. End-of-Life (EOL) Planning: If your organization is using M1 devices or older, this may be a good time to plan for device replacement, as older models may soon struggle with newer software demands. 4. Device Management: Transitioning to new hardware is a great opportunity to streamline asset tracking and management, particularly if you integrate devices into Apple Business Manager or a mobile device management (MDM) system. Check out our resources for more ideas for planning for 2025.

  • IT leader a part of a company planning to grow rapidly in 2025 but limited allocation of funds going towards IT? Streamline devices by breaking it down into 4 categories 1. Provisioning - figure out how to get laptops ready and into employees hands fast. You could use tools like Jamf and Firstbase to do so. In multiple geographical locations? It can get even more challenging. 2. Management - If you are on a 4 year refresh cycle or similar, you know you need to track devices. Streamline upgrade requests and distribute accordingly. Tools like Firstbase can manage this for you. 3. Retrievals - an employee is being offboarded, make sure you have an efficient process to retrieve those devices. Tools like Firstbase connected to your HRIS make this seamless. 4. Security - going for SOC2 or just trying to stay secure? Then provisioning, encryption, destruction and audit tracking are must needs. Okta SSO, Jamf and Firstbase can help here. Want the full playbook?
