As we approach #BannedBooksWeek, it's crucial to reflect on the consequences of restricting access to books. First Book surveyed over 1,500 educators, and 72% reported that book bans reduce students' engagement in reading, while 65% say these bans are negatively affecting their ability to teach. Let’s continue to advocate for open access to books that spark curiosity, foster learning, and celebrate diverse voices. Eliminating barriers. Inspiring young minds.
About us
Education transforms lives. First Book is building a world where every child has access to a quality education. We work to remove barriers to education and level the playing field for kids in need. At the heart of our work are the 600,000 members of the First Book Network, the largest online community of individual educators, professionals and volunteers dedicated to supporting children in need across North America. This Network is the key to creating systemic change. Through our research arm, First Book Research & Insights, we conduct studies that aggregate their voices to identify barriers to equitable education and inform strategic solutions. To address their needs, we provide free and low-cost books, resources, and access to leading experts through the First Book Marketplace, which uses aggregated buying power to support this underserved community. Founded in Washington D.C. in 1992 as a nonprofit social enterprise, First Book is dedicated to eliminating barriers to learning and inspiring young minds. I had the BEST experience today attending the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation’s author visit featuring Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr: Everywhere, Wonder – beautifully written and illustrated children’s picture book! Thank you for the invitation Elizabeth (SiSi) Beltrán Martí, Vice President and Executive Director of Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation and Julien Kaufman, Senior Cause Marketing and Communications Manager, Build-A-Bear Workshop! Matthew and Robbi are traveling the US on a mini tour giving away thousands of copies of their book thanks to the generosity of First Book. Today, the students attending the two author visit sessions received free copies of Everywhere, Wonder, and free bear-buddies from Build-A-Bear Workshop to take home with them! Oh, the INCREDIBLE JOY that filled the room when the kids learned about that good news! Building joy and excitement around books is necessary and important. These are the experiences children need to become powerful readers. Learn more about Matthew and Robbi’s travels at www.loadofbooks.com We are ensuring all children become confident and competent readers by the end of third grade. The Believe Projects
