For years, projected declines in American high school graduates have loomed over the future of #highereducation. Next year, that cliff will become more than a metaphor, according to a new report from the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. The number of 18-year-old high school graduates will peak in 2025 at around 3.9 million, the report projects, followed by a 15-year decline. By 2041, the number of traditional-age incoming #collegestudents will be down 13%. The report found that demographic trends will vary by region, but declines are expected across the country. The graduating class of 2025 will be the largest, possibly ever in the nation’s history, to don their caps and gowns this spring—but a long-predicted, steady decline in the number of high school graduates will follow in most states, threatening to shake up #highereducation #enrollment and the country’s workforce unless policymakers and #educationleaders intervene soon, a new report indicates. The latest data in the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education’s 11th edition of the “Knocking at the College Door” report, released Wednesday, reaffirms consistent projections that the country is about to see a peak in high school graduates—between 3.8 million and 3.9 million—but will see a downward slope in the years to come, dropping below 3.4 million in 2041. #Professors have long complained that #students don’t show up for #officehours. These days some are trying to lighten them up to foster connections with students. So some are trying things like calling them “student hours,” bribing students with snacks and turning them into social gatherings, complete with card games or coloring. Building relationships with students is essential to their success both in and outside of class.
