Last Thursday the ELCA and EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM held a joint workshop to Collaborate for Stronger European Leadership in Lightweight Materials and Technologies. The online workshop brought together 25+ ELCA and European Aluminium members from the aluminium and composite sectors, research organisations, and technology providers. Discussions focused on cross-sectoral collaboration and lay the groundwork for innovative projects targeting Horizon Europe 2025 funding. ELCA (European Lightweight Cluster Alliance) is a collaborative initiative that aims to accelerate the adoption of lightweight materials in strategic industries. Mobility is the primary focus of the alliance, but applications in other lightweighting-related sectors are also targeted; including energy, health care, defence and construction. The alliance is creating a unique inclusive business framework for exploring lightweight-driven market opportunities. The main players from established industries and research institutions can collaborate and facilitate activities to put lightweight technologies into practice.

Last week, ELCA members gathered in Krakow for our annual General Assembly to reflect on our achievements in 2024 and set ambitious goals for 2025! Over two days, we celebrated the successes of the AMULET H2020 project, which held its final event at the KOMPOZYT-EXPO®. On Day 2, we hosted an insightful joint workshop with the GIANCE project titled “Addressing Challenges: Graphene Solutions for Advancing Lightweight Materials.” The session fostered collaboration and innovation in advanced materials, spotlighting graphene’s transformative role in lightweight materials. We thank all those that participated over the two days, here's to continued growth and innovation in 2025! The 2024 Material Week was held in Cyprus for the first time, bringing together key research and innovation leaders driving advances in materials innovation. During the event, Indira Altynbekova from Bax presented the AMULET H2020 technology roadmap. This roadmap is being developed to inform decision-makers about the drivers, challenges, and innovations related to lightweight materials—polymer-based composites, light metal alloys, and ceramic matrix composites—across four different industrial sectors.
