Thanks Professor Elvis Au, BBS for sharing his experience and insights in our Refresher Course - Environmental Public Policy and Internation Environmental Conventions. Looking into the history of policies and wisdom from the past could guide our next step in the field of environmental management. #sustainability #environmentalmanagement #environmentalpolicy #wisdom
Feeling excited and gratified to be invited by Hong Kong Environmental Management Association and delivered a keynote lecture on Environmental Public Policy and International Environmental Conventions for professional training for a group of enthusiastic professionals in Hong Kong yesterday (16 July 2024). The preparation of this lecture has prompted me to re-read the most famous environmental book in our history, the Silent Spring by Rachel Carson published in 1962, and all important policy documents, international declarations, conventions and major legislations in the world and Hong Kong over the past 60 years. It was the first time I delivered an environmental policy course spanning over 60 years of environmental policy history and all major international conventions in the world and Hong Kong. Very glad to see and hear that the participants yesterday found the lecture very stimulating and useful for them. Re-reading all these enlightening books and policy ducuments have also re-energised and refreshed myself as well, especially the long lasting wisdom from Rachel Carson and the 1972 Stockham Declaration, which I find them still very useful for today! 😃🙏👍 “We in this generation, must come to terms with nature, and I think we’re challenged as mankind has never been challenged before to prove our maturity and our mastery, not of nature, but of ourselves.” Rachel Carson, Silent Spring 1962 “A point has been reached in history when we must shape our actions throughout the world with a more prudent care for their environmental consequences………through fuller knowledge and wiser action, we can achieve for ourselves and the posterity a better life in an environment more in keeping with human needs and hopes. …..To achieve this environmental goal will demand the acceptance of responsibility by citizens and communities and by enterprises and institutions at every level, all sharing equitably in common efforts” 1972 Stockholm Declararion. #sustainability #environmentalpolicy #internationalconvention #rachelcarson #silentspring #environmentalhistory
