Why we use Sysbox in our GitHub Actions pipelines... All of our CICD deployements run on GitHub Actions, using ephemeral Docker containers on VMs running on on-prem hardware. We found that when we wanted to stand up a Supabase instance in our pipeline, which runs a custom Docker image, we needed to be able to securely support docker-in-docker. We came across the awesome Sysbox container runtime by Nestybox (now acquired by Docker, Inc). Sysbox is a brilliant tool that allows us to securely run GitHub Actions in a container that supports DinD workloads. We initially had issues with builds inside the inner containers taking several hours. Cesar Talledo from Nestybox generously helped us out, pointing out that Sysbox was trapping some xattr syscalls, which meant that builds with a large number of files (like node_modules) would take unreasonably long. We implemented his feedback and the build time went down to what we expected. The speed and expertise of the support we got from the Nestybox team was exceptional. Why we switched to Supabase... Tim Riley is our CTO, and he's a damn fine hand at all things development. So good that we had our auth completely built out before he turned to me one day and said "I think we should switch to Supabase". Which I was on board with, for one key reason. Tech debt. Tech debt is a killer in small teams, and every feature we add is another feature that Tim or I have to figure out how to manage, support, and ensure is compliant, while still being valuable to our end users.
