  • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, joins the world in honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of our beloved Honorary Member, Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni. Nikki Giovanni, an acclaimed poet and literary icon, peacefully transitioned on December 9, 2024. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on June 7, 1943, Soror Giovanni was a trailblazer who inspired the world through revolutionary work. She served as a University Distinguished Professor in the English Department at Virginia Tech and received hundreds of awards and honors. She was most recently awarded a 2024 Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking for Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project. As one of the most celebrated poets of her time, Soror Giovanni used her art to articulate the joys, struggles, and triumphs of the Black experience. Her works, such as Ego-Tripping and Black Feeling, Black Talk/ Black Judgement, inspired generations to embrace their identity, challenge societal norms, and pursue justice with courage and conviction. Soror Giovanni was inducted into Honorary Membership during the 32nd National Convention in August 1973. She was proud to share in our bond of Sisterhood with both her mother (Yolande Giovanni) and sister (Gary Ann Giovanni), who were also members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She was an ideal Delta whose work and life deeply reflect the ideals of our Sorority. We celebrate her life with profound gratitude for her triumphant contributions to the arts, activism, and our Sorority. We extend our deepest condolences to her family (wife, Virginia Fowler; son, Thomas Giovanni; granddaughter, Kai Giovanni; two cousins, Haynes Ford and Allison [Pat] Ragan; and a nephew, Christopher Black.) and all who cherished her. May our beloved Soror Nikki Giovanni take her rest, knowing that her job here on earth was done exceptionally well. #DST1913

  • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated joins the world in celebrating the life and legacy of our beloved Honorary Member Judith Jamison. Judith Jamison, renowned dancer and choreographer, made her transition at the age of 81 on November 9, 2024. A native of Philadelphia, Soror Jamison began taking lessons at the Judimar School of Dance at the age of six. She went on to study the techniques of African American dance pioneer Katherine Dunham and eventually studied dance and kinesiology at the Philadelphia Dance Academy, now part of the University of the Arts. In 1964, Jamison earned critical acclaim for her work with choreographer Agnes de Mille and the American Ballet Theatre in New York. She began with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965. Soror Jamison's graceful talent served as inspiration for Mr. Alvin Ailey for over 15 years. She would go on to serve as Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for 21 years, where she brought the Company to unprecedented heights. Her dynamic career as a dancer, choreographer, director and speaker, has leapt over barriers of race and gender. We pay homage to the rich legacy she leaves.
