Rotational composite footage of the 3.5ha wetland area created in East Devon this spring. A series of scrapes, bunds and timbers were installed on the 'floodplain' before the stream that had been historically moved was reconnected for the first time in over 200 years. The scrapes vary in depth to provide low flow refuge for amphibians, invertebrates and wading birds. Water will gently seep between these features to slow flows and extend the viability of the wetland habitat as much as possible. The bunds - inspired by beavers, will hold the majority of the water at higher inflows. This design allows for storm flows to provide that peak storage necessary to reduce flood risk downstream. Each bund has an engineered spill point similar to a leaky dam to control the movement of water through the system and reduce erosional risk through their tapered downstream sides. 70 bundles of timbers were secured in place across the site to disrupt flow energy, spread water out across the land surface, raise the water table and maximise the holding capacity of the system, in addition to providing perches for birds making use of the site. Over the next few years the bund shapes will soften in the landscape, wetland plug plants will introduce native species, and nature will have space to be.
