A big Friday shoutout of gratitude to NYS Assembly Member Chantel Jackson, who recently awarded The Door a $25,000 grant to support expanded food and nutrition services at The Door's Bronx Youth Center. We had the pleasure of having AM Jackson visit us last week at our South Bronx facility in her district. She toured the beautiful space and talked with our staff about the range of expanded services now being offered at BYC, including food, arts, legal help, and a 24-hour drop-in center where youth members can access basic needs services, shelter support, benefits navigation, financial counseling. We also discussed the dual mental health crisis—the skyrocketing need for youth mental health services, along with a shortage of NYC providers to meet that demand—as well The Door’s recent initiatives to build systemic solutions that address these crises: expanded mental health offerings and a new, innovative pilot program for Door staff, in partnership with NYU Silver School of Social Work, that will make acquiring a Master’s of Social Work degree more accessible. Thank you again, AM Jackson, for the thoughtful discussion and for your support! We look forward to more partnership opportunities and collaborations with you in the future. Congratulations to our long-time partners, @OldNavy, for being selected as a finalist for the 2024 Anthem Awards. Old Navy is a true leader in workforce development and opportunity hiring. The Door is honored to have partnered with# OldNavy for more than 17 years to operate This Way ONward. Together, we have supported thousands of New York City youth in building the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their careers. We’re so grateful to Philanthropy New York for hosting Door CEO Kelsey Louie and Director of Mental Health Services Phoebe Richman at the Ford Foundation for their thought-provoking and timely “The Youth Mental Health Crisis” convening a few weeks ago. As part of a panel on building the future mental health workforce serving young people, Kelsey shared about The Door’s new pilot, a new Hybrid Master of Social Work program recently launched in collaboration with NYU Silver School of Social Work. The program’s flexible design will make acquiring an MSW degree more accessible, and less time- and cost-prohibitive. A cohort of 14 staffers began their studies in September and will earn their degrees in 2026. Phoebe participated in a panel of nonprofit providers sharing firsthand experiences of funding and delivery challenges in youth mental health.
