“It's been the most powerful learning of our professional lives.” Last month, nearly 30 leaders from our League of Innovative Schools and Global Cities Education Network (GCEN) traveled to Finland to gain insights and practical strategies around the country’s leading approach to whole child development. The trip was part of Digital Promise’s Whole Child Development Implementation Cohort, a learning model built on the power of collaborative learning with and from education systems and leaders from around the world. In an article for K-12 Dive, Christy Northway (Surrey Schools (School District #36 Surrey)#36 Surrey)#36), Luis Correa, Ed.D (Gurnee School District 56), and Barbara Pape (Digital Promise) reflect on key takeaways from the trip, including effective approaches to fostering belonging through intentionality and focus, promoting teacher autonomy and alternative methods of evaluation and assessment, and designing learning for the whole child. We’re pleased to welcome another research team to SEERNet! Drs. Miyake, Bernacki, Kane, and Snyder are tackling academic procrastination—an issue that significantly affects student performance and wellbeing. Partnering with the Terracotta platform, their project will design and test interventions within the Canvas LMS to address two common causes of procrastination: negative emotions toward tasks and the tendency to prioritize immediate gratification. Through videos, assignments, and infographics, they aim to provide students with practical strategies to stay focused and achieve academic success. With a randomized controlled trial involving 10,000 students, this research holds the potential to reshape how educators understand and address procrastination in the classroom.
