A few months ago, together with the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, we hosted a series of AI Dialogues exploring the role of AI in achieving development outcomes. These conversations revealed three critical lessons: 1️⃣ The push to develop AI often overlooks when—or even whether—AI is useful. 2️⃣ Access to appropriate training data remains a barrier to building AI tools that serve the most vulnerable. 3️⃣ Decision-makers lack the knowledge needed to regulate and deploy AI tools effectively. So, how can we ensure AI is developed and used in fair, responsible, and human-centered ways? 🌟 Empowering Impact through M&E: Insights from a Transformative Workshop 🌟 What does the Titanic’s story teach us about Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)? According to Thelma Ebube Obiakor at the recently concluded 5-day workshop on M&E, it’s a powerful reminder of the need for structure, clear task delegation, and data-driven decision-making to achieve goals successfully. Monitoring and evaluation is more than data collection, it is the backbone of strategic progress, ensuring every intervention delivers measurable and lasting results. The Centre for the Study of the economies of Africa, Development Gateway: An IREX Venture and the Federal Ministry of Health, gathered stakeholders to dive deep into M&E tools, methodologies, and applications for sustainable development. From defining causal pathways and designing logical frameworks to understanding KPIs and midline assessments, participants gained hands-on experience to shape policies and programs that drive meaningful change. Last week, the Tobacco Control Data Initiative (TCDI), together with the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA), held a 4-day meeting to reflect on our first year of partnership, plan for the year ahead, and onboard new in-country sustainability partners. Building on the momentum of TCDI 2.0—a phase focused on fostering local ownership and sustainability—our discussions highlighted the critical role partnerships play in deepening and expanding tobacco control efforts. By bringing together new and existing partners, we aim to ensure that our work remains impactful, locally-driven, and sustainable long-term.
