“There's nothing more exciting to me than coming to work knowing there's a problem to solve.” This is the 12th and final post in this series: Developing DeliLabel. “I think that what I'm most excited about with DeliLabel are the future possibilities. We have a laundry list of improvements, such as: Could we continue to improve the speed of the application? Could we improve the user interaction? “I sat with our internal team the other day, and I was surprised by some of the ideas that came up. They had really good suggestions for how we can improve. “Going beyond DeliLabel and thinking about the other apps we’re now developing under our MarketSquare Tech business gets me really excited. We’re seeing a path for creating a well-rounded, back-end suite of tools for small businesses, most likely food retail businesses. “The most boring day for me is when there are no problems. There's nothing more exciting to me than coming to work knowing there's a problem to solve. So, as an example, our tech team recently gave a demo to some of our farm market team, related to a new app we’re developing (InTrac.) We asked the farm market team about the physical flow of how they did certain things so that we could translate that into software that is in alignment. That was the kind of meeting I look forward to, when we’re building something innovative and useful to us and to others.” Excerpted from an interview with Keith Zimmerman Square

“... it takes a lot of time, energy, and resources to get something started, marketed, and turned into a viable business.” This is part 11 of an entrepreneur’s journey: Developing DeliLabel. “It never ceases to amaze me how, when you have a vision for something, and you start with that, over time that picture tends to grow. And it becomes clearer as you go. “But one of the things I've learned is, at the front side of it, it's impossible to anticipate everything that might or could be in a project like this. I've always enjoyed technology because of the usefulness of it. You can automate things with it. Using technology as a tool has always fascinated me. “I’ve also learned that it always takes more money than you think it will. I don't have any regrets with what we've done with DeliLabel. But, it takes a lot of time, energy, and resources to get something started, marketed, and turned into a viable business. “I grew up selling nails, bolts, screwdrivers, hammers, saws. Physical things. What I like about the world of SaaS software is the diversity that it offers, and it allows us to take what we have learned from the day-to-day work in our farm market and push it out to a broader audience. We can take the knowledge and experience from the front-end of our retail business and use that to craft a solution and improve the lives of people who have the same sort of challenges and who find value in the same sort of solutions that we've developed.” Excerpted from an interview with Keith Zimmerman Square

“I mistakenly booked our flight to San Diego. So, my lead developer and I drove all night so that we would be on time for the conference." This is part 10 of an entrepreneur’s journey: Developing DeliLabel. "Sometime in mid-2022, Square reached out to us and said they were trying to be more strategic with their App Partners. We were given a rep to work with, someone as a connection point. This was the beginning of our App Partner relationship with Square. “Over time, we built enough of a rapport with them that they invited us to a Square app developer conference in the summer of 2023. "The conference was in San Francisco. I mistakenly booked our flight to San Diego. So, my lead developer and I drove all night so that we would be on time for the conference. Once we got there, we met our rep in person and some of the other key folks from Square. "Our relationship with Square has grown over the years. Our app to do label printing, real-world front-end tasks for their customers is unique; it helps add to the functionality of Square, and gives Square the opportunity to process more payments. “Since we use Square and DeliLabel in our retail store, it gives us a unique position to see and understand the challenges small businesses face. We continue to work closely with Square on a number of initiatives as we collectively seek to improve our small business software solutions.” Excerpted from an interview with Keith Zimmerman Square

“I knew there were ways, using that mysterious API tool, to connect our application to their data.” This is part 9 of an entrepreneur’s journey: Developing DeliLabel. "When we first started looking at integrating with Square, I did not know what an API was. All I knew was that Square had some APIs, but I had no idea how they worked. I knew there were ways, using that mysterious API tool, to connect our application to their data. "We weren’t thinking about marketing at that point. And if we did market DeliLabel, it was just going to be a little something on the side that we had fun with. Maybe we’d have 10 or 20 users and eventually it would pay us back what we invested in it. "At the time, Square did not have a developer program like they have now. They had APIs and documentation. We didn’t talk to anyone at Square; we just did our thing. "The first interaction I had with them was in the middle of 2021 when we were prepping to go live to the public. They had launched their Square App Marketplace. I wanted to get our application into their Marketplace. I reached out to them and said, 'Hey, here's what we got. What's the process involved?' "It turned out we were just catching them as they were continuing to develop their approved partner program. So, the onboarding process was a bit slow at first, but eventually, Square approved our app and it showed up in their Marketplace. So now, a Square merchant could go into the Marketplace, find DeliLabel, and learn what we could do for them." Excerpted from an interview with Keith Zimmerman Square
