At DORA we believe that publishing requires constant innovation and renewal in order for it to remain relevant. We have watched closely the developments regarding eLife Sciences Publications, Ltd. and Clarivate. We are concerned by the action that Clarivate is taking, but not because of the possibility that eLife will not be eligible for a Journal Impact Factor but because Clarivate can use its market dominance to shut down innovation. We therefore support eLife and encourage it to continue its innovation and encourage other journals to consider doing the same. https://lnkd.in/gDZr3Mqs

A publication’s “what” should count more than its “where”: why we should waive journal titles Adrian Barnett reflects in the DORA blog on the true impact of research, why he’s taken journal titles off his CV and how one of his papers could - a long time later - have led to his parents getting a new boiler. https://lnkd.in/gqUcjyVZ

Congratulations to all the winners- and especially Kelly! Work such as this is not often recognised, so it’s great when it is.
We are delighted to announce the 2024 Springer Nature #MaddoxPrize winners! Patrick Ball has been awarded the 2024 John Maddox Prize for standing up for science. The judges commended Patrick's work, and how he “has steadfastly advocated for introducing rigour in cataloguing human rights abuses despite limited resources." Kelly Cobey has been awarded the 2024 John Maddox Early Career Award. The judges commended her “revolutionary” work which “tackles deep, thorny issues + proactively provides scientists with tools to assist and encourage them in adopting open science practices.” Congratulations to our winners!

In recent years, the landscape of research assessment has been evolving to better recognize and reward open scholarship and preprints. This shift is driven by funding organizations and academic institutions that seek to enhance transparency, accessibility, and equity in research. In this piece from our blog, Zen Faulkes and Haley Hazlett from Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) explore: ➡️ The reform of research assessment and increasing recognition of preprints. ➡️ The movement of open scholarship looking to change how scholarly knowledge is shared, and to address global inequities in scholarly culture itself. ➡️ How to build trust in “non-traditional” outputs through transparent research practices. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gKcQRp_a

DORA’s guidance on responsible use of quantitative indicators suggests 5 principles, like: Be specific: How well does the indicator refer to the qualities of the person or the piece of work being assessed? Be mindful of aggregate metrics. https://lnkd.in/eNKv_cAP (PDF)
