DC Voters for Animals was at the third annual Animal Policy Alliance summit last month, hosted by The Humane League. This is the convening of state & local policy orgs coming together to lobby for animals. It was an honor to be amongst such thoughtful, inspiring people.
Last week, I had the pleasure of coordinating and leading the third annual Animal Policy Alliance (APA) Summit. The APA Summit is an event hosted by The Humane League that brings a coalition of animal protection organizations together from all corners of the US to discuss legislative strategy, emerging policies, and collaboration opportunities impacting animals. At the conclusion of the APA Summit, we all left with a collective sense of community, inspiration, and empowerment as we continue to advance meaningful policy reform for animals. Now 23 organizations strong across 15 states plus Washington DC, the APA is a growing coalition of state and locally based organizations who come together to stop the abuse of animals raised for food and fur through legislative advocacy. Learn more about the APA here: https://lnkd.in/gMKxBgMB DC Voters for Animals, NORTHWEST ANIMAL RIGHTS NETWORK, Voters For Animal Rights, Animal Rights Initiative, Pasado's Safe Haven, Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation, Texas Humane Legislation Network, Associated Humane Societies, Animal Protection Voters, Vegan Activist Alliance, Chilis on Wheels, Humane Action Pittsburgh, Tindakan, Compassionate Action for Animals, MSPCA-Angell, Social Compassion in Legislation, Cultivate Empathy for All

The Pets in Housing Act has taken an important step forward! Led by At Large Councilmember Robert White, the DC Council‘s Housing Committee approved this bill today. Next it will go to the full council for two separate votes. Tune in live at the hearing on Dec 3 to see the Councilmembers discuss this bill. https://lnkd.in/g-FDqa7K This important bill will make a difference for DC renters and companion animals by 1) Capping pet rent and security deposits 2) Requiring that DC operate at least one shelter that can accommodate pets 3) Striking breed restrictions Councilmember White pointed out in his remarks at the meeting today that this bill is designed to support people fleeing domestic violence, stop the use of dog breed as an informal method of red lining, increase housing access, and support responsible pet guardianship.
