  • Friday’s Hawaiian Word of the Day Keiki (KEI-ki) The Hawaiian word keiki originates from the language's roots in describing growth and lineage, making its meaning rich and multi-faceted. It directly translates to child or children, and you’ll often hear the term used when referring to kids, but its use is deeply tied to the Hawaiian understanding of family, community, and nature. In Hawaiian culture, keiki reflects the idea of growth and nurture—much like a plant sprouting from a seed. This concept links keiki not only to human children but also to the offspring of animals or even young plants, emphasizing their potential and the responsibility of the community to care for and guide them. We’re proud to sponsor Hawaiʻi Public Radio’s Hawaiian Word of the Day, which encourages awareness and use of the Hawaiian language, or ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, in everyday conversation. Tune in to HPR every weekday at 7:28 a.m. HT for the Word of the Day and visit our page every Friday as we highlight and celebrate ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. #WordOfTheDay #Hawaiian #Hawaii #Language #Culture #Keiki

  • Friday’s Hawaiian Word of the Day Makai (mah-KAI) If you ask someone for directions in Hawai’i, you may hear them use the terms makai or mauka (last week's Hawaiian Word of the Day) to indicate on which side of the road a place is located. Makai means on the ocean side of the road and Mauka means on the mountainside of the road. You will find that these terms are much more useful than “right side” or “left side” when navigating the winding roads in Hawai‘i. No matter which direction you are facing, Makai will always be toward the ocean, and mauka will always be toward the mountain. HT for the Word of the Day and visit our page eve Friday as we highlight and celebrate ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. #WordOfTheDay #Hawaiian #Hawaii #Language #Culture #Makai

Giving Tuesday: People Transforming Their Communities Around the World Today is Giving Tuesday, a global movement that began in 2012 encouraging people to do good by giving back to their communities through donations, volunteering, or acts of kindness. It occurs annually on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the United States. This timing emphasizes a shift from consumerism to generosity. Why does Giving Tuesday matter? It promotes generosity, inspiring individuals, businesses, and organizations to support causes they care about, showcasing all the ways they mālama (care for) their communities. We have a shared kuleana (responsibility) to care for our communities, and Giving Tuesday offers an opportunity to make a difference in a meaningful way. The Hawaiian Native Corporation and DAWSON ‘Ohana are dedicated to caring for the communities where we work and live throughout the year by supporting numerous organizations via volunteering, in-kind donations, and monetary contributions. Take a look at some of our community impact organizations DAWSON and the HNC support and tell us who you’re giving to this Giving Tuesday! https://lnkd.in/g5rifgCn #GivingTuesday #GiveBack #Community #Caring #Volunteer #ActsOfKindness #Generosity
