Common Basketball Injuries🏀
Playing basketball is a fun way to stay active, but it comes with a risk of injuries. Today, I’ll highlight some common basketball-related injuries and how they occur.
The most common injury is an ankle sprain, often caused by rolling your ankle during jumping or stepping awkwardly. This typically results in an inversion injury, where ligaments on the outside of the ankle are damaged. However, an eversion injury can also occur, affecting the ligaments on the inside of the ankle. In severe cases, an ankle sprain can lead to a fracture, which happens similarly but involves greater force.
Another common issue involves the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in your body, which attaches to the back of the heel and is essential for jumping and pushing off. A frequent condition is Achilles tendonitis, an inflammation of the tendon, usually where it connects to the heel but sometimes throughout the tendon. If left untreated, this can lead to thickening or even tearing of the tendon. A more serious injury is an Achilles tendon rupture, where the tendon detaches from the bone. This often feels like being “shot” in the back of the ankle.
